Nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations endowed with power-law diffusion terms have proven to be valuable tools for the study of diverse complex systems in physics, biology, and other fields. The nonlinearity appearing in these evolution equations can be interpreted as providing an effective description of a system of particles interacting via short-range forces while performing overdamped motion under the effect of an external confining potential. This point of view has been recently applied to the study of thermodynamical features of interacting vortices in type II superconductors. In the present work we explore an embedding of the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation within a Vlasov equation, thus incorporating inertial effects to the concomitant particle dynamics. Exact time-dependent solutions of the q-Gaussian form (with compact support) are obtained for the Vlasov equation in the case of quadratic confining potentials.

The framework of mean-field games (MFGs) is used for modeling the collective dynamics of large populations of non-cooperative decision-making agents. We formulate and analyze a kinetic MFG model for an interacting system of non-cooperative motile agents with inertial dynamics and finite-range interactions, where each agent is minimizing a biologically inspired cost function. By analyzing the associated coupled forward-backward in a time system of nonlinear Fokker-Planck and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, we obtain conditions for closed-loop linear stability of the spatially homogeneous MFG equilibrium that corresponds to an ordered state with non-zero mean speed.

We present probabilistic solutions to a pair of mutually coupled Van der Pol oscillators subjected to stochastic forcing. We consider three different types of coupling: reactive, dissipative, and nonlinear coupling. Using stochastic averaging, we derive the stationary Fokker-Planck equation for each oscillator, yielding a probability density function for the fluctuation amplitude.

We derive and numerically validate a low-order oscillator model to capture the stochastic dynamics of a prototypical thermoacoustic system (a Rijke tube) undergoing a subcritical Hopf bifurcation in the presence of additive noise. We find that on the fixed-point branch before the bifurcation, the system is dominated by the first duct mode, and the Fokker-Planck solution for the first Galerkin mode can adequately predict the stochastic dynamics of the overall system. We also find that this analytical framework predicts well the dominant mode on the limit-cycle branch, but underperforms in the hysteretic bistable zone where the role of nonlinearities is more pronounced.

During cell division, the mitotic spindle moves dynamically through the cell to position the chromosomes and determine the ultimate spatial position of the two daughter cells. These movements have been attributed to the action of cortical force generators which pull on the astral microtubules to position the spindle, as well as pushing events by these same microtubules against the cell cortex and plasma membrane. Attachment and detachment of cortical force generators working antagonistically against centring forces of microtubules have been modelled previously (Grill et al.

In epidemics, waning immunity is common after infection or vaccination of individuals. Immunity levels are highly heterogeneous and dynamic. This work presents an immuno-epidemiological model that captures the fundamental dynamic features of immunity acquisition and wane after infection or vaccination and analyzes mathematically its dynamical properties.
