[Heavy menstrual bleeding affects quality of life in adolescents].

Rev Chil Pediatr

Departamento de Pediatría, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile.

Published: December 2017

Introduction: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) occurs in 37% of adolescents and compromise their quality of life.

Objective: To measure the magnitude of the impact of the SME on the quality of life in adolescents.

Patients And Method: We interviewed adolescents diagnosed with HMB between 10 and 18 years old and one of their guardians. PedsQL 4.0 generic core scale was applied to measure quality of life, its Proxy PedsQL 4.0 version was applied to the guardian and 3 more questions to adolescents about limitation of daily activities. The concordance between the guardian's perception of the adolescent quality of life and the adolescent's perception was evaluated with the Bland and Altman graph.

Results: 46 adolescents and guardians were evaluated. The total average PedsQL 4.0 score for adolescents was 64.48 (SD 14.54), with a range of 18.48 to 88.04 with a greater involvement in the emotional dimension. 50% of adolescents missed school, 80.4% physical education and 65.2% outdoor activities or parties. There was no agreement between the perception of the girls and guar dians.

Conclusions: We evidence a deterioration in the quality of life of the surveyed adolescents, being the emotional dimension most affected. The performance in the questionnaire was also lower than in samples of chronic diseases published with this same tool.

The Use of Omics in Untangling the Effect of Lifestyle Factors in Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes: A Systematic Review.

Diabetes Metab Res Rev

January 2025

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Adelaide Medical School, The University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia.

Aim: To synthesise the evidence from clinical trials and observational studies using omics techniques to investigate the impact of diet and lifestyle factors on metabolite profile in pregnancy, and in the prevention and management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Materials And Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Ovid, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases in October 2023 and updated in September 2024. Inclusion criteria were randomised controlled trials (RCT) or non-RCTs in pregnant women with or without GDM, that measured diet and lifestyle factors, and which applied post-transcriptional omics approaches.

[Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction following spinal cord injury].

Urologie

January 2025

Neuro-Urologie, Schweizer Paraplegiker-Zentrum, Guido A. Zäch-Straße 1, 6207, Nottwil, Schweiz.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), which, if left untreated, can result not only in urinary incontinence and an increased risk of urinary tract infections and kidney dysfunction but may also pose a vital threat to people with SCI. Comprehensive neurourological assessments, including patient history and combined video urodynamics, are essential to accurately classify dysfunction and establish therapeutic strategies. Treatment options include, among others, medications for detrusor regulation, intermittent catheterization, and, if necessary, surgical interventions from intradetrusor botulinum toxin A injections to sacral deafferentation.

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this review is to outline considerations for treating older adults with rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) as it relates to infection, comorbidities, cancer, and quality of life.

Recent Findings: The recent 2023 American College of Rheumatology/American College of Chest Physicians guideline conditionally recommended specific disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), antifibrotics, and short-term glucocorticoids to treat RA-ILD. Since RA-ILD often affects older adults, we contextualize these pharmacologic options related to infection, gastrointestinal (GI) effects, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and quality of life.

Purpose: The etiology of early-onset scoliosis (EOS) has been shown to significantly influence baseline parent-reported health-related quality of life (HrQOL). In combining these etiology groups, we obligatorily lump together many disparate diagnoses, particularly true in the neuromuscular (NM) cohort. We sought to evaluate the influence of underlying neuromuscular diagnosis on the HrQOL at 5 years following surgery for EOS.

Background: Depressive symptom is the most common type of psychiatric co-morbidity among persons with epilepsy. Epilepsy patients are identified as at higher risk of suffering depressive symptom explicitly in low- and middle-income countries due to poor mental health care systems and financial burdens. The co-occurrence of depressive symptom among epilepsy patients deteriorates the prognosis of the disease and diminishes the quality of life of both the patients and their families.
