Peri-implant tissue breakdown can be the result of microbial action as well as of biomechanical and occlusal overload. The long-term goal of the treatment of peri-implant breakdown is to arrest the progression of the disease and to achieve a maintainable site for the patient. Peri-implant bony defects around functioning implants can be treated with either non-surgical or surgical (resective or regenerative) techniques. Bone regeneration is possible in selected peri-implant bony defects of functioning implants if appropriate surgical techniques are utilized and the etiologic cause is eradicated. The present study investigated the in vivo aging of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) oral implants (ZiUnite®) removed after 37 to 181 months. These implants featured a porous zirconia surface to enhance osseointegration. They were placed in prospective clinical investigations and had to be explanted due to peri-implant bone breakdown.

Background And Objective: Dental implant therapy faces challenges in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM and T2DM) due to adverse effects on bone metabolism and immune response. Despite advancements, diabetic patients face higher risks of peri-implantitis and compromised osseointegration. This review assesses the impact of anti-diabetic medications on implant outcomes, offering insights to bridge the gap between animal studies and clinical practice.

Purpose: To analyze the effect of n-HA/chitosan/minocycline composite scaffold in the animal model of peri-implant inflammatory bone defect.
Methods: Twelve healthy adult male beagle dogs were selected to construct the model of peri-implant inflammatory bone defect. The control group(n=6) underwent bone regeneration by alveolar self-healing without any treatment in the bone defect area.

Aim: We aimed to investigate whether α-ketoglutarate (AKG) can promote autophagic activity under a peri-implant condition to enhance the osseointegration of dental implant in rats with osteoporosis (OP).
Methods: Con, Model and AKG groups were established for the random allocation of thirty rats ( = 10). Their bone metabolism indicators were measured.
