The EDTA-extractable protein (EEP) is a major extrinsic protein of lens membrane. The 35 kilodalton (kDa) polypeptide of the EEP cross-reacted to antibody prepared against calpactin I, a substrate for the src protein and an inhibitor of phospholipase A2. Calpactin I is also thought to play a structural role in linking cytoskeleton to membrane. The 35 kDa protein in bovine lens contained phosphotyrosine residues that can be detected by affinity purified antibody to this moiety. Although there is some microheterogeneity of EEP using two dimensional gel electrophoresis, at least one of the chick polypeptides, immunoreactive for calpactin I, can be phosphorylated in whole lens culture. These results suggest a regulatory function for the EEP in lens.

As lead is one of the most hazardous heavy metals in river ecosystem, the influence of exogenous lead pollution on enzyme activities and organic matter degradation in the surface of river sediment with high moisture content were studied at laboratory scale. The dynamic changes of urease, catalase, protease activities, organic matter content, and exchangeable or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-extractable Pb concentration in sediment were monitored during different levels of exogenous lead infiltrating into sediment. At the early stage of incubation, the activities of catalase and protease were inhibited, whereas the urease activities were enhanced with different levels of exogenous lead.

Generic biomarkers are needed to assess environmental risks in metal polluted soils. We assessed the strength of the relationship between earthworm energy reserves and metal availability under conditions of cocktail of metals at low doses and large range of soil parameters. Aporrectodea caliginosa was exposed in laboratory to a panel of soils differing in Cd, Pb and Zn total and available (CaCl2 and EDTA-extractable) concentrations, and in soil texture, pH, CEC and organic-C.

Megasphaera cerevisiae is a Gram-negative obligate anaerobe that causes turbidity and off-flavour and aroma in beer. Seven isolates of M. cerevisiae were obtained worldwide, and their extractable surface antigens were focused upon to determine if there is more than one serogroup of this bacterium.

Biochemical changes in a canine bone-lengthening model were characterized 5 months after surgery. The mineral content and the total amount of EDTA-extractable noncollagenous proteins, insulin-like growth factor-I, and osteocalcin were determined for the lengthened callus, and a gradient density fractionation analysis of bone powder particles was performed. The results were compared with two other areas of the lengthened tibia and one region of the contralateral tibia.

It was demonstrated previously that a polyclonal antibody (ES1) raised against EDTA extractable proteins from embryonic chicken heart blocks cardiac endothelial-mesenchymal transformation in a culture bioassay and stains extracellular matrix at sites of embryonic inductive interactions, e.g., developing heart, limb buds, and neural crest forming region [Krug et al.
