Many state-of-the-art fundamental and industrial projects need the use of terahertz radiation with high power and small linewidth. Gyrotrons as radiation sources provide the desired level of power in the sub-THz and THz frequency range, but have substantial free-running frequency fluctuations of the order of 10. Here, we demonstrate that the precise frequency stability of a high-power sub-THz gyrotron can be achieved by a phase-lock loop in the anode voltage control. The relative width of the frequency spectrum and the frequency stability obtained for a 0.263 THz/100 W gyrotron are 4 × 10 and 10, respectively, and these parameters are better than those demonstrated so far with high-power sources by almost three orders of magnitude. This approach confirms its potential for ultra-high precision spectroscopy, the development of sources with large-scale radiating apertures, and other new projects.

Enhanced high-energy proton radiation hardness of ZnO thin-film transistors with a passivation layer.

Nano Converg

January 2025

Advanced Radiation Technology Institute, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, 29 Geumgu-gil, Jeongeup-si, Jeolabuk-do, 56212, Republic of Korea.

Metal-oxide thin-film semiconductors have been highlighted as next-generation space semiconductors owing to their excellent radiation hardness based on their dimensional advantages of very low thickness and insensitivity to crystal structure. However, thin-film transistors (TFTs) do not exhibit intrinsic radiation hardness owing to the chemical reactions at the interface exposed to ambient air. In this study, significantly enhanced radiation hardness of AlO-passivated ZnO TFTs against high-energy protons with energies of up to 100 MeV is obtained owing to the passivation layer blocking interactions with external reactants, thereby maintaining the chemical stability of the thin-film semiconductor.

Background: A healthier diet is associated with lower chronic disease burden, but the impact of neighbourhood food environments on disability and death in older adults is not known.

Methods: In the Cardiovascular Health Study, a cohort study of adults aged 65+, we calculated study years until death (years of life (YOL)), study years without activities of daily living (ADL) difficulty (years of able life; YoAL) and percent of study years without ADL difficulty (compression of disability). Linear regression quantified associations of food establishments within 5 km of baseline home address (as a z-score) with each outcome, adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics.

Does fast running limit numerical variability of the vertebral column in rabbits and hares (Leporidae: Lagomorpha)?

In mammalian vertebral columns, locomotive ability is expected to be an evolutionary driver of variation in the number of vertebrae; in species evolved to run fast or have a flexible vertebral column, they generally have limited numerical variation and low occurrence of malformed vertebrae to maintain their running performance. Although this hypothesis is supported among species sharing similar locomotive constraints (e.g.

Background: Understanding healthcare personnel's (HCP) contact patterns are important to mitigate healthcare-associated infectious disease transmission. Little is known about how HCP contact patterns change over time or during outbreaks such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: This study in a large United States healthcare system examined the social contact patterns of HCP via standardized social contact diaries.
