Metastases is largely responsible for the mortality among cancer patients. Metastasis formation is a complex multistep process, which results from the propagation of cancer cells from the primary tumor to distant sites of the body. Research on cancer metastasis aims to understand the mechanisms involved in the spread of cancer cells through the development of in vivo assays that assess cell invasion. Here we describe the use of the chick chorioallantoic membrane to evaluate cancer cell invasiveness in vivo. The chick chorioallantoic membrane assay is based on the detection and quantification of disseminated human tumor cells in the chick embryo femurs by real-time PCR amplification of human Alu sequences.

Targeting tumor angiogenesis with safe endogenous protein inhibitors is a promising therapeutic approach despite the plethora of the first line of emerging chemotherapeutic drugs. The extracellular matrix network in the blood vessel basement membrane and growth factors released from endothelial and tumor cells promote the neovascularization which supports the tumor growth. Contrastingly, small cleaved cryptic fragments of the C-terminal non collagenous domains of the same basement membrane display antiangiogenic effect.

There is a growing need for safer alternatives to synthetic additives commonly used in lipophilic carriers for products such as foods, pharmaceuticals, personal care items, and cosmetics. Natural antioxidants, which prevent lipid peroxidation while providing additional health benefits, offer a promising solution. Evening primrose oil, a rich source of antioxidant compounds with numerous biological benefits, emerges as a potential natural preservative for oil-based products.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS), a class of glycosaminoglycans covalently attached to proteins to form proteoglycans, is widely distributed in the extracellular matrix and cell surface of animal tissues. In our previous study, CS was used as a template for the synthesis of seleno-chondroitin sulfate (SeCS) through the redox reaction of ascorbic acid (Vc) and sodium selenite (NaSeO) and we found that SeCS could inhibit tumor cell proliferation and invasion. However, its effect on angiogenesis and its underlying mechanism are unknown.

Purpose: In addition to rodent models, the chick embryo model has gained attention for radiotracer evaluation. Previous studies have investigated tumours on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), but its value for radiotracer imaging of intracerebral tumours has yet to be demonstrated.

Procedures: Human U87 glioblastoma cells and U87-IDH1 mutant glioma cells were implanted into the brains of chick embryos at developmental day 5.

Introduction: FTY720 bioactive lipid has proliferative, osteoinductive, chemo attractive, and angiogenic properties, being thus a potential exogenous administered agent for promotion of bone regeneration. Herein we developed FTY720-loaded liposomes as a potential delivery system that could retain and prolong the bioactivity of the bioactive lipid and at the same time reduce its cytotoxicity (at high doses).

Methods: FTY720 liposomes were prepared by thin-lipid hydration and microfluidic flow focusing, and evaluated for their ability to induce proliferation, osteoinduction, and chemoattraction in three cell types: MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cells, L929 fibroblast cells, and ATDC5 chondrogenic cells.
