Effect of UV exposure on DNA deposited on drug capsules.

Forensic Sci Int

January 2025

College of Science and Engineering, Flinders University, Bedford Park, South Australia 5042, Australia.

Illicit drugs are often made in less-than-sterile environments and can be stored in ways which can be detrimental to any DNA present, such as whether they are exposed to UV radiation. Previously, analysis of how exposure to UV impacted DNA for forensic applications has been in controlled laboratory conditions isolating a single component of UV radiation and often on DNA-rich samples such as bloodstains or saliva. To evaluate DNA persistence in more realistic conditions, capsules, such as those used to distribute controlled substances, were manually made and then packed into ziplock bags.

Pathogen contamination and harborage in low-moisture food (LMF) processing environments have resulted in outbreaks and recalls, but researchers are limited in their abilities to investigate solutions. Methods used in most laboratory studies do not accurately reflect the route of contamination or harborage of pathogens in LMF environments, which complicates studying of sanitation methods. Inoculation methods were compared to establish low-moisture food persistent bacterial populations (LMF PBPs) that realistically reflect populations found in LMF environments.

Preparation of photodynamic-controlled release packaging for pork preservation and its visualization.

Food Chem

January 2025

Agricultural Product Processing and Storage Lab, School of Food and Biological Engineering, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, Jiangsu 212013, China. Electronic address:

The current study aimed to synthesize a ZIF-8 metal-organic framework loaded with the Rose Bengal (ZIF-8@RB) as the photodynamic sterilization ingredient to address the uncontrolled release of active ingredients in packaging films. The photodynamic controlled release packaging film was then prepared using a PVDF polymer matrix via uniaxial electrospinning. The microstructure, particle size, excitation wavelength, and singlet oxygen yield of ZIF-8@RB were examined.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has emerged as a promising technology for neutralizing microbes, including multidrug-resistant strains. This study investigates CAP's potential as an alternative to traditional antimicrobial drugs for microbial inactivation. In the era of increasing antimicrobial resistance, there is a persistent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio (NHHR) and infertility in US female adults aged 20 to 45.

Methods: Our research team utilized data from the 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to conduct a cross-sectional study. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to examine the association between NHHR and infertility, with trend tests providing additional insight into this relationship.
