Selenium is a trace element which fulfils important functions in the organism. Its deficit may cause acute disorders, but an overdose can also lead to severe consequences. The functions of selenium in the organism are mainly connected with its antioxidant properties, as it is an essential part of important antioxidant enzymes. Disturbances of oxidant balance have been found to be involved in the activity of numerous harmful factors as well as in the pathogenesis of diverse illnesses. Selenium administration has proved to be effective against the toxicity of many agents and the side effects of drugs. However, the narrow range between therapeutic and toxic doses of selenium, as well as the dependence of its effect on the applied form, dose and method of treatment, makes the choice of the most effective supplement a very complex issue. Divergent forms of selenium are still being studied, including both inorganic and organic compounds as well as Se-enriched natural products. The newest research has also involved selenium nanoparticles. The aim of this review is to present the great potential of selenium for protecting the organism against a wide variety of environmental pollutants, drugs and physical factors.

Biological semi-passive mine water treatment technologies are used in the mining industry as an alternative to or in conjunction with active treatment systems to remediate mine impacted water (MIW) containing nitrate and selenium oxyanions such as selenate and selenite. In semi-passive biological treatment systems, MIW is pumped through a saturated, porous media (either a gravel bed or waste rock) which provides ample surface area for biofilm growth and the creation of anoxic, subaqueous environments. Additional nutrients and carbon sources are pumped into the system to encourage the growth of microbes that biochemically reduce selenate and selenite to insoluble reduced Se species such as selenium nanoparticles (SeNP) by respiring selenate and selenite.

The incorporation of a selenoimidazolium-based chalcogen bond (ChB) donor into a bis-heteroleptic Ru(II) complex (Ru-Se) has been designed for the first time to explore its anion-sensing properties and understand its selectivity to specific classes of anions. Photophysical studies demonstrate the receptor's selectivity toward phosphates, while H NMR displays its ability to recognize both I and HPO among the different halides and oxoanions through ChB interaction in CHCN and dimethyl sulfoxide- solvents, respectively. Additionally, microscopic studies such as DLS and TEM reveal that the selective turn-on sensing of HPO and HPO compared to I is driven by supramolecular aggregation behavior.

Monitoring selenium (Se) concentrations in fish ovaries is an important tool for evaluating the ecological risk posed by Se in aquatic systems. Most guidance recommends sampling fish ovaries as closely as possible to when fish spawn on the premise that Se is mobilized from the liver to the ovary during vitellogenesis, and therefore, sampling ovaries during the early phases of oocyte maturation may underestimate egg Se concentrations at the time of spawning. In this study, we evaluated ovary Se data from two species with synchronous oocyte development (Ptychocheilus oregonensis and Prosopium williamsoni), one species with asynchronous oocyte development (Richardsonius balteatus), and one where the mode of development is unclear (Mylocheilus caurinus).
