Article Abstract

Biochar (BC) application to soils is of growing interest as a strategy to improve soil fertility and mitigate climate change. However, BC-induced alterations in the soil N cycle are currently under debate. BC has recently been shown to accelerate the emissions of NO via the biotic ammonium oxidation pathway, which results in lower nitrogen use efficiency and environmentally harmful losses of NO and/ or NO. To avoid these potential losses, the use of nitrification inhibitor (NI) could provide a useful mitigation strategy for BC-amended agricultural fields. Here, we tested the sorption behavior of a model NI, the synthetic 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) on 15-month-aged soil-BC mixtures. We saw that BC additions increased DMPP sorption to varying extents depending on BC feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature. The highest sorption was found for BC pyrolyzed at a lower temperature. BC effects on soil physico-chemical characteristics (i.e., hydrophobicity) seem to be important factors.

To explore the effects of the components in the raw materials and by-products of co-pyrolysis on the physicochemical properties of biochar, rice husk (RH, which has a high percentage of lignin and a low content of N) and sawdust (SD, which has a high percentage of both cellulose and N) were used as typical raw materials to prepare co-pyrolysis biochar. The benzene vapor adsorption performance of the obtained biochar was then tested on a fixed-bed device. At the same time, the by-product components generated during pyrolysis were analyzed using thermogravimetric (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

To investigate the remediation effect of iron-manganese-modified biochar from different biomasses (FM-BC) on Cd-contaminated alkaline soil, FM-BC was prepared using branches of , durian shells, and corn stalks. The characteristics of FM-BC, the adsorption of Cd(Ⅱ) in water, and the available, fraction of Cd in alkaline soil were studied using bath adsorption and soil culture experiments. The results showed that the specific surface area, total pore volume, and oxygen content of FM-BC were significantly improved.

Compared to the laboratory preparation of biochar, there is less research on the adsorption of antibiotics by industrial production of biochar in water. In this study, three types of industrial production biochar (peanut shell biochar, sludge biochar, and perishable waste biochar) were selected, and their adsorption performance for tetracycline in composite-polluted water was systematically studied. The results indicated that the Freundlich equation could well fit the adsorption isotherms of the three types of biochar for tetracycline.

Constructed wetlands, serving as artificially simulated natural wetland water treatment systems, have emerged as effective technologies for ecologically treating wastewater. Biochar, a carbon material derived from biomass waste pyrolysis, possesses significant specific surface area, abundant functional groups, and high stability. The integration of biochar into artificial wetland systems enhances the removal efficiency of pollutants.

Contamination of chars with dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCB) significantly limits their use and hinders their deployment in the circular bioeconomy, specifically in applications that may lead to dietary exposure. Here, for the first time, we review the levels of contamination of chars produced from pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) with dl-PCB congeners. We conduct a detailed and critical examination of the role played by the processing parameters, such as temperature and residence time, and the reaction mechanisms, to detoxify the biomass under an oxygen-free atmosphere during its valorisation.
