This study describes a self-doping and additive-free strategy for the synthesis of metal-nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials (CMs) via carbonizing well-tailored precursors, metal-containing ionic liquids (M-ILs). The organic skeleton in M-ILs serves as both carbon and nitrogen sources, while metal ions acts as porogen and metallic dopants. A high nitrogen content, appropriate content of metallic species and hierarchical porosity synergistically endow the resultant CMs (MIBA-M-T) as effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). MIBA-Fe-900 with a high specific surface area of 1567 m g exhibits an activity similar to that of Pt/C catalyst, a higher tolerance to methanol than Pt/C, and long-term durability. This work supplies a simple and convenient route for the preparation of metal-containing carbon electrocatalysts.

The rational design of metal-nitrogen-doped carbons (M-N-C) from available and cost-effective sources featuring high electrocatalytic performance and stability is attractive for the development of viable low-temperature fuel cells. Herein, mimosa tannin, an abundant polyphenol easily extracted from the Mimosa plant, is used as a natural carbon source to produce a tannin-Fe(III) coordination complex. This process is assisted by Pluronic F127, which acts as both a surfactant and a promoter of Fe-N active sites.

Noble-Metal-Free nitrogen-doped carbon-based materials are promising electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet it remains a great challenge to construct efficient porous non-noble metal nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts with uniform distribution, due to the easy aggregation of metals. Herein, we reported the synthesis and assessment of a novel and efficient noble-metal-free catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) from pyrolysis of a cobalt-containing cellulosic poly(ionic liquid) (Co-N-C). The prepared Co-N-C catalyst possesses high surface area, hierarchical porous structure, well-dispersed Co nanoparticles and large amounts of low-coordinated Co active sites.

Metal/nitrogen-doped carbon single-atom catalysts (M-N-C SACs) show excellent catalytic performance with a maximum atom utilization and customizable tunable electronic structure. However, precisely modulating the M-N coordination in M-N-C SACs remains a grand challenge. Here, we used a N-rich nucleobase coordination self-assembly strategy to precisely regulate the dispersion of metal atoms by controlling the metal ratio.

The control of morphology, structure and composition of metal-organic frameworks derived metal-nitrogen doped porous carbon (M-N-C) with high precision and accuracy is essential for the catalytic performance. While single-atom or small-sized nanometer catalysts show notable effects in catalysis, one catalyst combining the advantages of single-atom and nanometer catalysts may cultivate more benefits. Herein, we designed and successfully fabricated a series of Fe-doped ZIF-x with different morphologies (cube→truncated hexahedron→truncated octahedron) in one pot by simply adjusting the adding amount of vitamin C.

Recently, Ni, N-doped carbon (NiNC) electrocatalysts synthesized using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as templates have demonstrated attractive catalytic performances in the CO reduction reaction (CORR). However, most of the reported preparations of MOFs-based precursors are carried out in organic solvents, and the resulting NiNC materials have relatively low metal loadings and mainly exhibit microporous structures, which is unfavorable for the mass transport. Herein, Ni, N-doped meso-microporous carbon electrocatalysts with a range of Ni loadings (M-NiNCx/CNTs) were prepared by the pyrolysis of MOFs-based precursors synthesized in aqueous solution using the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a modifier to promote the adsorption of Ni ions and the formation of mesopores.
