Attachment, caregiving in couple relationships, and prosocial behavior in the wider world. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

According to attachment theory, a sense of attachment security (confidence that others will be available and supportive when needed) facilitates the functioning of the caregiving behavioral system and the empathic provision of care to suffering others. In this article we review what has been learned during the last decade about attachment-related individual differences in caregiving within couple relationships and prosocial behavior in the wider world. We begin with a brief account of attachment theory and the dynamic interplay of the attachment and caregiving behavioral systems. We then review findings from correlational and experimental studies showing that attachment security has positive influences on noticing and reacting favorably to the suffering of romantic partners and strangers.

Increasingly, researchers have operationalized Adult Attachment Interview (AAI)-derived attachment representations as reflecting individual differences in secure base script knowledge (AAI)-the degree to which individuals show awareness of the temporal-causal schema that summarizes the basic features of seeking and receiving effective support from caregivers when in distress. In a series of pre-registered analyses, we used AAI transcripts recently re-coded for AAI and leveraged a new follow-up assessment of the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development cohort at around age 30 years (479 currently partnered participants; 59% female; 82% White/non-Hispanic) to assess and compare the links between AAI and traditional AAI coding measures at around age 18 years and self-reported romantic relationship quality in adulthood. Higher AAI predicted better dyadic adjustment scores in adulthood ( = 0.

Promoting First Relationships (PFR) is an evidence-based home-visiting program for caregivers and their children from birth to age 5 years. It focuses on caregiver-child interaction, attachment, and relationship quality using video feedback of unedited recordings to elicit reflection and provide positive feedback linked to knowledge development. This paper provides a brief history of PFR and reports on a qualitative study of 222 caregivers' comments about their PFR experiences following participation in one of four randomized controlled trials conducted over the past decade in the United States (two studies within child welfare setting, one study with Native American families, and one study with Spanish and English-speaking mothers), using a thematic analysis approach to code excerpts from written satisfaction surveys and oral satisfaction interviews.

Physical contact between infants and caregivers is crucial for attachment development. Previous research shows that skin-to-skin contact after birth and frequent baby wearing in the first year predict secure attachment at 12-months. This relationship is thought to be mediated by the activation of infants' parasympathetic nervous system through caregiver touch.

Background: High adherence to behavioral interventions among parents of autistic children contribute to improvement in children's behaviors and parental outcomes. However, most of previous studies focused on the effects of intervention adherence on health-related well-being among parents, which is inadequate to capture the multi-dimensional parental burden of caring for autistic children. The aim of this study is to assess the association between parents' adherence to behavioral intervention and their capability well-being.

Empathy, Theory of Mind, and psychological outcomes in early parenthood: comparing mothers, fathers, and non-parents.

J Reprod Infant Psychol

December 2024

Faculty of Psychology, Counselling, & Psychotherapy, The Cairnmillar Institute, Hawthorn East, Victoria, Australia.

Aims/background: Parenthood may influence social cognitive processes such as Theory of Mind (ToM) and empathy, which are linked to parental psychological well-being. However, there is limited research on these relationship in the early postpartum period (6-12 months post-birth). This study explores differences in ToM and empathy in parents of young infants compared to non-parents and examines how these traits relate to parents' psychological well-being, attachment, and caregiving attitudes.
