Although the sternoclavicular joint shares structural similarities with the knee and hip joints as a diarthrodial joint, its biomechanics differ significantly due to its non-weight-bearing nature. Nevertheless, it is subject to considerable loading, leading to increased susceptibility to osteoarthritis, a prevalent condition characterized by the degeneration of the joint's articular surfaces and fibrocartilaginous intra-articular disc. The osteoarthritic degeneration of the fibrocartilaginous and cartilaginous surfaces of the sternoclavicular joint has been investigated, considering multiple factors.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the distribution of Anterior Chest Wall (ACW) arthropathies in a tertiary care center and identify clinical, biological and imaging findings to differentiate osteoarthritis (OA) from non-osteoarthritis (N-OA) etiologies.

Methods: Search from medical records from January 2009 to April 2022, including patients with manubriosternal and/or sternoclavicular and/or sternocostal joint changes confirmed by ultrasonography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. The final study group was divided into OA and N-OA subgroups.

Injury to the sternoclavicular joint (SCG) is very rare, accounting for 3% of shoulder injuries and < 1% of instabilities. Consequently, both the treatment of acute instabilities and their subsequent states (chronic instabilities/SCG arthrosis) are controversial. While treatment has so far been mostly conservative, in recent years there has been a trend towards surgical therapy.
