Background: The past decade has witnessed successful expansion, distribution and curricular renewal at the University of British Columbia (UBC) medical school. The expansion and distribution of the medical program doubled enrollment and established the first North American medical school training students across multiple geographical locations. The more recent competency-based curriculum renewal demonstrates sustained innovation within UBC medicine.
Aims: This paper describes that a significant contributor to these successes has been a team of teaching faculty whose exclusive roles have been providing curricular support. Over the past decade, this group has evolved into a vital component of the day-to-day operations and performance of the distributed medical curriculum; they now provide continuity in leadership and innovation across multiple educational facets of the program.
Method/results: This paper reports on the evolution and significance of these faculty members. The descriptions establish the success of an investment in teaching faculty and underscore the importance of engaging faculty whose primary commitments are to teaching, educational pedagogy, and student support.
Conclusions: This efficacious model of supporting and advancing a complex distributed medical program over more than a decade of pivotal change will be of interest to faculties and programs that are contemplating or navigating similar pursuits.

Based on the symmetric initiation mechanism of double-wing cracks in coal rock mass induced by high-pressure electro-recoil water pressure, fracturing experiments have been performed on coal rock mass under different water pressures and discharge conditions using high-voltage electric pulse hydraulic fracturing devices. Combined with CT scans, the crack spatial distribution inside the post-break coal rock mass was analyzed and found that the edge of the water injection hole is prone to produce double-wing cracks along the drilling hole diameter. ABAQUS is used to verify the physical test and extend the test conditions, the geometric parameter change, morphological expansion rule and crack initiation mechanism of double-wing crack in coal rock mass under different discharge conditions and ground stress conditions are studied.

Advances in analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and in microelectronic mechanical systems (MEMS) based microheaters have enabled in-situ materials' characterization at the nanometer scale at elevated temperature. In addition to resolving the structural information at elevated temperatures, detailed knowledge of the local temperature distribution inside the sample is essential to reveal thermally induced phenomena and processes. Here, we investigate the accuracy of plasmon energy expansion thermometry (PEET) as a method to map the local temperature in a tungsten (W) lamella in a range between room temperature and 700 °C.
