Bedside repair of congenital upper eyelid entropion: A variation of the Quickert suture technique.

Published: December 2016

Purpose: The current literature is void of any lasting bedside treatments for congenital upper eyelid entropion repair.

Observations: A six-day old male was born with bilateral upper eyelid entropion associated with a duplication of the long arm of chromosome 3q11.1-q24. Conservative management with ocular lubrication and observation did not yield spontaneous resolution, and surgical intervention was performed at the bedside with a Quickert suture technique.

Conclusions And Importance: We discuss the novel use of this technique and review the relevant literature. Our technique is something not previously described in the literature for congenital upper eyelid entropion. It obtained satisfactory and sustained resolution.

Purpose: To describe a technique using retroauricular scalp graft for eyebrow reconstruction, along with problems encountered and countermeasures in treatment.

Methods: We present a patient with eyebrow loss following resection of a malignant schwannoma. We initially covered the defect from the upper eyelid to the eyebrow area with artificial dermis for hemostasis and to increase the granulation of the graft bed.

Upper and lower eyelid contour and positional changes after deep skin grafts in ablepharon macrostomia syndrome.

Department of Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome is a rare congenital disorder caused by autosomal-dominant mutations. This condition is characterized by redundant skin, low-set ears, macrostomia, ambiguous genitalia, and underdevelopment of the both upper and lower eyelids. The shortening of the anterior lamella, septum and levator aponeurosis lead to a severe corneal exposure within the first hours of life.

A 39-year-old woman presented a saucer-shaped mass in the left upper eyelid and underwent the extirpation at local anesthesia. Pathologically, collagen fibers, capillaries, small vessels, and CD34-positive spindle cells were dispersed among mature adipose tissues, indicative of spindle cell lipoma. Long-lasting cyst-like eyelid masses would be usually dermoid cysts, and spindle cell lipoma would be listed as a rare pathological diagnosis in differential diagnoses of cyst-like lesions in the upper and lower eyelid.

Purpose: Lagophthalmos from facial nerve palsy is traditionally measured with patients in an upright position and may fail to identify positional variability. This study aims to assess the effects of body position, surgical technique, implant material, and patient demographics on lagophthalmos.

Methods: A multicenter prospective study was performed to evaluate positional changes in paralytic lagophthalmos and the effects of various patient and surgical factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Tarsal heights in Asian eyelids were found to be higher than previously reported, which may clarify issues with traditional double eyelid surgery methods.
  • A novel 'MAP method' for creating double eyelid creases was developed, involving specific suturing techniques that preserve important eyelid tissue and provide adjustable crease heights based on individual patient preferences.
  • This new technique offers better eyelid mechanics, a quicker recovery process, and longer-lasting results with minimal complications compared to classic procedures.
