This paper reports the properties of the plasma and gas produced in a vacuum arc discharge with scandium deuteride (ScD) film cathodes. The thickness of the ScD film influences the quantity of the gases released from the cathode material. The deuterium gas releasing in the discharge process was in a depth range from the cathode surface to the cathode interior, that is, between 3 and 6 μm. Surprisingly, after discharge, the deuterium ion ratio remains the same in the film with different thicknesses. That indicates that the release of deuterium gas in a 3 μm-thick ScD film is enough for ionization. In addition, as the number of discharge increases, the stability of atomic fraction ratio gets worse and the ratio of deuterium ions decreases.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with a very long duration, posing a serious threat to people's life and health. To date, no medicine that can cure or reverse the disease has been developed or reported, so early diagnosis and timely intervention are essential. The concentration of Phosphorylated tau181 (P-tau181) in blood has been approved by FDA as a standard for assisting clinical diagnosis of AD.

Purpose: High dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is integral for the treatment of numerous cancers. Preclinical studies involving HDR brachytherapy are limited. We aimed to describe a novel platform allowing multi-modality studies with clinical HDR brachytherapy and external beam irradiators, establish baseline dosimetry standard of a preclinical orthovoltage irradiator, to determine accurate dosimetric methods.

Balsam sulfide, produced by the reaction of turpentine/rosin and sulfur, has been used as one of the raw materials of liquid gold to decorate ceramics and tableware with thin gold film for more than 100 years. The characterization of balsam sulfide is still insufficient because of its compositional complexity. In this study, balsam sulfide was characterized using pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC)-mass spectrometry (MS) and Py-GC with sulfur chemiluminescence detection (SCD) as well as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight MS (MALDI-TOFMS).

Background: During COVID-19 lockdown measures, memory clinic patients reported worries for faster cognitive decline, due to loss of structure and feelings of loneliness and depression. We aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on rate of cognitive decline in a mixed memory clinic population, compared to matched historical controls.
Methods: We included patients who visited Alzheimer Center Amsterdam 6 months to 1 week before the first Dutch COVID-19 lockdown, and had a second visit 1 year later, after this lockdown period (n = 113; 66 ± 7 years old; 30% female; n = 55 dementia, n = 31 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), n = 18 subjective cognitive decline (SCD), n = 9 postponed diagnosis).

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited monogenic disease which is characterized by distorted red blood cells (RBCs) that cause vaso-occlusion and vasculopathy. In the pathogenesis of SCD, polymerized hemoglobin turn RBCs into fragile, less deformable cells, and are subsequently more susceptible to endothelial adhesion after deoxygenation. Presently, electrophoresis and genotyping are used as routine tests for diagnosis of SCD.
