Published: January 2016

As far as the rights of consumers are concerned, the International Organization of Consumer's Union (IOCU) in 1983 has specified about the eight rights of a consumer. The Consumer Protection Act (CPA), 1986 then prescribed six "Rights of Consumers," which are protected under the act. However, these rights can be observed in the ancient Indian texts such as , , and ., in the form of rights given to patients. For the purpose of present study, the implemented methodology includes - (1) study of the consumer rights described by IOCU and CPA, (2) detailed review of literature for observance of replication of these consumer rights in the ancient Indian texts and (3) a comparative study of the present consumer rights with the rights of patients observed in ancient Indian texts. This study shows that the substance of consumer rights is not a recent evolution, but the foundation of these rights has been laid well beforehand in the ancient times, which were provided to the patients by medical profession as well as by the rulers. The current scenario of protection of consumer rights is the replication of this ancient practice only.

From Waste to Innovation: A Circular Economy Approach for Tissue Engineering by Transforming Human Bone Waste into Novel Collagen Membranes.

Biomolecules

January 2025

Department of Surgery and Specialties, Central University Hospital of Asturias, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Oviedo, 33011 Oviedo, Spain.

The aim of the circular economy is to treat waste as a valuable raw material, reintegrating it into the industrial economy and extending the lifecycle of subsequent products. Efforts to reduce the production of hard-to-recycle waste are becoming increasingly important to manufacturers, not only of consumer goods but also of specialized items that are difficult to manufacture, such as medical supplies, which have now become a priority for the European Union. The purpose of the study is to manufacture a novel human-purified type I collagen membrane from bone remnants typically discarded during the processing of cortico-cancellous bones in tissue banks and to evaluate its mechanical properties and effectiveness in regenerating bone-critical mandibular defects in rabbits.

Trematodes of the genus are parasites that are common in East and Southeast Asia. These parasites are known to infect fish, thus impacting aquaculture significantly. An introspection into the dynamics of infection of these parasites has revealed possible co-infection in shared hosts.

The link between serotonergic modulation and depression is under debate; however, serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) are still the first-choice medicine in this condition. Disturbances in time perception are also reported in depression with one of the behavioral schedules used to study interval timing, differential-reinforcement-learning-of-low-rate, having been shown to have high predictive validity for an antidepressant effect. Here, we introduce an IntelliCage research protocol of an interval bisection task that allows more ecologically valid and less time-consuming rodent examination and provides an example of its use to confirm the previously reported acute effect of an SRI, clomipramine, on interval timing (increase in bisection point, D50).

Smokeless tobacco: knowledge, attitudes and usage in Pakistan.

J Health Popul Nutr

January 2025

Section of Pulmonology and Critical Care, Department of Medicine, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, 74800, Pakistan.

Background: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) encompasses products that are not burnt but instead consumed orally or nasally. One-third of tobacco is consumed in the smokeless form in South Asia. Despite its widespread usage, there has been limited empirical research on the prevalence and factors influencing SLT consumption in Pakistan.

Bacterial ghosts (BGs), non-living empty envelopes of bacteria, are produced either through genetic engineering or chemical treatment of bacteria, retaining the shape of their parent cells. BGs are considered vaccine candidates, promising delivery systems, and vaccine adjuvants. The practical use of BGs in vaccine development for humans is limited because of concerns about the preservation of viable bacteria in BGs.
