AI Article Synopsis

  • Chondrosarcoma is a rare and slow-growing malignant tumor found in the cartilaginous tissues of the head and neck, particularly in the anterior maxilla and base of the skull.
  • A case is reported involving a "Grade II Chondrosarcoma" located on the posterior right side of the palate.
  • This tumor has invaded the maxillary sinus and perforated the floor of the orbit, indicating its aggressive nature.

Article Abstract

Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant cartilaginous tumor of the head and neck region. It is a slow-growing tumor and is mostly detected in the anterior maxilla and the base of the skull. We report a case of "Grade II Chondrosarcoma" of the posterior right side of the palate invading maxillary sinus and perforating the floor of the orbit.

Introduction: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is a high-grade variant of chondrosarcoma, essentially composed of poorly differentiated spindle cells interspersed with areas of cartilage or chondroid matrix. MC is extremely rare; it only accounts for 0.1 % of head and neck tumors and for only 1 % of all chondrosarcomas (CSs).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the rare occurrence of malignant transformation in craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (FD), analyzing 305 patients over 18 years.
  • Out of these, 15 cases (4.9%) involved malignant changes, predominantly affecting females, with ages at diagnosis and transformation averaging 28.87 and 38.53 years, respectively.
  • The most common malignancy was osteosarcoma, and overall survival rates were low, with only 33.3% and 20% surviving at 3 and 5 years.

The contralateral transmaxillary corridor improves access to anterior petrous apex lesions back to the level of the internal auditory canal without the need to mobilize the paraclival internal carotid artery. In this Video 1, we present the case of 31-year-old female patient who presented with new left abducens palsy during pregnancy. Imaging revealed a heterogeneous enhancing extradural mass within the left petrous apex region extending posterior to the horizontal segment of the petrous internal carotid artery, consistent with chondrosarcoma.

Sinonasal chondrosarcoma in a llama.

J Vet Diagn Invest

November 2024

Departments of Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University, Auburn, AL, USA.

A 14-y-old intact female llama () was presented for evaluation of a right maxillary swelling of 3-mo duration. Clinically, the animal had mild nasal discharge, abnormal retropulsion of the right eye, and moderate gingival disease. An incisional biopsy of the maxillary mass revealed pleomorphic and mitotically active neoplastic spindle-to-stellate cells organized in haphazard lacunae embedded in abundant chondroid matrix.

Chondrosarcomas are slow-growing malignant tumors that originate in cartilaginous structures. They typically manifest in the head and neck region, with a preference for the maxillofacial skeleton, particularly the mandible and maxilla. However, chondrosarcoma of the sinonasal tract is exceptionally rare, and only few cases have been reported.
