The Epidemiological Investigation Committee for Human Mycoses in Japan performed a retrospective epidemiological survey of candidemia and causative Candida species. Data from 2003 to 2014 were collected from 10 Japanese university hospitals. A total of 328,318 blood cultures were included. The prevalence of fungi in all cultures and in positive cultures were 0.58±0.09% and 4.46±0.66%, respectively. Among the results that were positive for Candida species (N=1,921), Candida albicans was the most common species (39.5%) and was followed by Candida parapsilosis (23.3%), Candida glabrata (13.2%), Candida tropicalis (7.1%), Candida krusei (3.2%), and others (13.7%). During the last 6 years, the frequency of C. albicans has significantly decreased in Japan, while that of C. glabrata has increased. Additional surveys are needed to continuously monitor the trends in the distribution of candidemia.

The Brazilian National Environmental Council (CONAMA) Resolution 420/2009 establishes soil quality guideline values for copper, as the prevention value (PV). It defines the maximum concentrations of chemical substances permitted in the soil. Thus, the aim of the present research was to evaluate the effectiveness of the copper PV adopted at the national level by conducting exposure assays with enchytraeids (Enchytraeus crypticus, Enchytraeus bigeminus and Enchytraeus dudichi) and springtails (Folsomia candida, Proisotoma minuta and Sinella curviseta) in two Brazilian subtropical soils: a Latosol and an Argisol.

Based on DMR022 [(AEEA-Gly)-AEEA-amphotericin B methyl ester, AEEA is the abbreviation of 8-amino-3,6-dioxaoctanoic acid] and DMR031 [(AEEA)-amphotericin B methyl ester], DMR040 [(AEEA)-amphotericin B methyl ester] was further designed and synthesised. Firstly, DMR040 was assessed for its antifungal activity and haemolytic toxicity with the broth dilution method and sterile defibrinated sheep blood, respectively. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of DMR040 (2 μg/mL) against Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and ATCC 90028 was reduced by 2 times compared to that of amphotericin B (1 μg/mL).
