The physical principles underlying expansion of a single-chain polyelectrolyte coil caused by Coulomb repulsions among its ionized groups, and the expansion of a cross-linked polyelectrolyte gel, are probably the same. In this paper, we analyze a "one-dimensional" version of a gel, namely, a linear chain of charged beads connected by Hooke's law springs. In the Debye-Hückel range of relatively weak Coulomb strength, where counterion condensation does not occur, the springs are realistically stretched on a nanolength scale by the repulsive interactions among the beads, if we use a spring constant normalized by the inverse square of the solvent Bjerrum length. The persistence length and radius of gyration counter-intuitively decrease when Coulomb strength is increased, if analyzed in the framework of an OSF-type theory; however, a buckling theory generates the increase that is consistent with bead-spring simulations.

Synovial exudation, creeping, and lubrication failure in natural cartilage under a long-term normal loading can be counteracted by a tribo-rehydration (sliding-induced rehydration) phenomenon. Hydrogels, as porous materials, can also restore interfacial lubrication and overcome creep through this strategy. At appropriate sliding velocities, water molecules at the interface contact inlet are driven by hydrodynamic pressures into the porous network to resist creep extrusion.

Eutectogels are popular as an emerging material in the field of flexible electronics. However, limited mechanical properties and ionic conductivity restrict their multifunctional application expansion. Herein, cationic chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQS) was evenly embedded into the three-dimensional porous framework of eutectogel to build ion migration channels.

Particle and field-theoretic simulations are both commonly used methods to study the equilibrium properties of polymeric materials. Yet despite the formal equivalence of the two methods, no comprehensive comparisons of particle and field-theoretic simulations exist in the literature. In this work, we seek to fill this gap by performing a systematic and quantitative comparison of particle and field-theoretic simulations.

Dry socket, also known as alveolar osteitis, presents significant challenges in oral surgery because of severe pain and delayed wound healing. This study aims to address these challenges by developing and evaluating a lidocaine-loaded polyelectrolyte complex thermoresponsive gel (LG) designed to enhance wound healing and provide effective pain management in oral wounds. The thermoresponsive gel transitions from a liquid to a gel at body temperature, ensuring sustained contact with the wound site and prolonged release of lidocaine.
