Background: Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a parameter that evaluates the platelet size. Clinical applications of MPV are limited because of its poor standardization in routine laboratories. This study analyzed the effect of anticoagulants on MPV measurements by impedance technology.
Methods: Blood from 36 healthy volunteers was collected in vacuum tubes filled with K2EDTA and sodium citrate, analyzed immediately (basal) and at 1, 2, and 3 hours after venipuncture.
Results: Comparisons between the anticoagulants demonstrated a significant difference (p < 0.05) after 1 hour of exposure with K2EDTA, causing a time-dependent increase on MPV measured. No significant changes in MPV were observed with sodium citrate with 3 hours of exposure (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: The use of sodium citrate is highly indicated for assessment of MPV when the measurement time after blood collection is estimated to be more than 1 hour.

A nanocomposite consisting of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was fabricated by a two-step chemical reduction method. Firstly, a PDDA-rGO composite was prepared by using hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent. Subsequently, the AuNP-PDDA-rGO composite was prepared in ethylene glycol with PDDA-rGO and HAuCl as raw materials using sodium citrate as a reduction agent.

This study investigated membrane fouling issues associated with the operation of a submerged ultrafiltration membrane in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and optimized the associated chemical cleaning strategies. By analyzing the surface components of the membrane foulant and the compositions of the membrane cleaning solution, the primary causes of membrane fouling were identified. Membrane fouling control strategies suitable for the DWTP were evaluated through chemical cleaning tests conducted for bench-scale, full-scale, and engineering cases.

We investigated the cost-effectiveness of treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA) with ferric citrate hydrate (FC) in Japan. We employed four treatment strategies: switching from sodium ferrous citrate (SF) to FC at (1) 500 mg (approximately 120 mg of iron) per day or (2) 1000 mg (approximately 240 mg of iron) per day in patients with SF-induced nausea/vomiting, or starting treatment with FC at (3) 500 mg/day or (4) 1000 mg/day. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of these strategies compared with SF 100 mg (100 mg of iron) per day.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a complex disorder characterized by prolonged, unexplained fatigue and challenging diagnosis. We report the case of a 35-year-old Japanese woman with CFS who had experienced chronic fatigue since the age of 11 years. Despite treatment with modafinil, methylphenidate, levocarnitine, and ubiquinone, the symptoms persisted.
