Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become a public health problem worldwide, and it has large implications for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this article, we discuss the etiology and pathophysiology of CVD in DM including the effects of abnormal glucose homeostasis, genetic factors, epigenetics, apoptosis, common pathophysiological mechanisms shared by both DM and CVD, and contributions of other comorbidities. We then cover the pathogenesis of both atherosclerotic disease and cardiomyopathy in relation to DM. Finally, we discuss the prevention of heart disease in DM with a focus on hypertension and dyslipidemia management, weight loss, lifestyle changes, antiplatelet therapy, and glycemic control.

Background: Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury refers to cell damage that occurs as a consequence of the restoration of blood circulation following reperfusion therapy for cardiovascular diseases, and it is a primary cause of myocardial infarction. The search for nove therapeutic targets in the context of I/R injury is currently a highly active area of research. p70 ribosomal S6 kinase (S6K1) plays an important role in I/R induced necrosis, although the specific mechanisms remain unclear.

Background: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD), which is caused mainly by Group A Streptococcus, leads to fibrotic damage to heart valves. Recently, endothelial‒mesenchymal transition (EndMT), in which activin plays an important role, has been shown to be an important factor in RHD valvular injury. However, the mechanism of activin activity and EndMT in RHD valvular injury is not clear.

Generally, the electrocardiography (ECG) system plays an important role in preventing and diagnosing heart diseases. To further improve the amenity and convenience of using an ECG system, we built a customized capacitive electrocardiography (cECG) system with one wet electrode, sixteen non-contact electrodes, two ADS1299 chips, and one STM32F303-based microcontroller unit (MCU). This new cECG system could acquire, save, and display the ECG data in real time.

Heat Stroke Warning System Prototype for Athletes: A Pilot Study.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Sports Science and Sports Development, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Thammasat University, Pathumthani 12120, Thailand.

This research has developed a heat stroke warning system prototype for athletes utilizing the following sensors: DHT22, GY-906-BAA MLX90614, MAX30102. The device calculates the heat stroke risk and notifies users. The data is recorded, stored, displayed on a free-access website which graphs body temperature, ambient temperature, humidity, heart rate and heat stroke risk, and provides notifications for athletes engaged in outdoor activities.

Cardioneuroablation is a rapidly developing procedure for the treatment of vagally mediated bradyarrhythmias. However, the lack of multicenter, randomized trials prevents it from being included in bradyarrhythmia treatment guidelines. So far, only one small, randomized study has been published assessing the effectiveness of this method in the treatment of reflex syncope.
