Objective: To understand the dynamic endemic situation of schistosomiasis in Nanjing City, 2015, so as to provide evidences for policy-making of schistosomiasis control.

Methods: According to The National Scheme of Schistosomiasis Surveillance (2014), the endemic situation of schistosomiasis was monitored in 11 national surveillance sites in Nanjing.

Results: The positive rates of serological (IHA) and stool examinations were 2.97% (97/3 269) and 0 for local residents, and 0.52% (12/2 298) and 0 for migrant people, respectively. No schistosome-infected livestock was found. Totally 147.295 3 hm area with snails were found, but no schistosome-infected snails were discovered.

Conclusions: The endemic situation of schistosomiasis declines greatly in Nanjing City in 2015. However, the control work still should be strengthened to consolidate the achievements of schistosomiasis control.

Background: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) and schistosomiasis comprise the most wide-spread NTDs globally. Preventative chemotherapy is a cost-effective approach to controlling morbidity of both diseases, but relies on large scale surveys to determine and revise treatment frequency. Availability of detailed information on survey costs is limited despite recent methodological surveying innovations.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease with a complex transmission mechanism, requiring a snail intermediate host, is influenced by biology, the environment, human behavior and the prevailing socioeconomic situation. This study aimed to systematically investigate the importance and feasibility of indicators related to the factors influencing transmission and intervention measures for and . Based on a literature review and group discussions according to the Delphi method, a framework questionnaire was designed.

Objectives: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of lymphatic filariasis (LF), soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and schistosomiasis (SC) in Indonesia before and after PC implementation through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched for articles published between 1 January 1992 and 31 December 2022, reporting LF, STH and SC in Indonesia. Using the Ministry of Health lists of districts receiving PC programs, we identified whether data collection was conducted before or after PC implementation in that particular district.

Article Synopsis
  • Schistosomiasis is a widespread disease in Côte d'Ivoire, and a study compared the conventional Kato Katz (KK) test with the more sensitive point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA) test to improve control strategies for intestinal schistosomiasis.
  • A survey involving 554 schoolchildren from eight elementary schools found that the prevalence of intestinal schistosomiasis was significantly higher when using the POC-CCA (67%) compared to the KK test (10%), highlighting the need for more effective diagnostic methods.
  • Activities such as swimming and fishing were linked to higher infection rates, indicating a strong association between lifestyle choices and schistosomiasis prevalence, suggesting the necessity for targeted interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied intestinal schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni in children living along the southern shoreline of Lake Malawi, five years after a disease outbreak, using advanced diagnostic techniques.
  • They utilized various methods including microscopy and real-time PCR on fecal and urine samples to assess infection rates and found that the prevalence of S. mansoni varied greatly based on the diagnostic tool used.
  • The study highlighted that while fecal-egg microscopy had very low sensitivity, the point-of-care test showed moderate sensitivity depending on how results were interpreted, also revealing notable DNA presence of another species, S. haematobium, in the samples.
