There is an interest in assessing changes in nasal NO (nNO) levels as an effect marker of upper airways. In this study, we examined methodologic influences on short and long term repeatability of nNO levels assessed by a portable electrochemical analyzer. Nine atopic and eighteen healthy subjects were exposed for 4 h to ethyl acrylate concentration of 0.05 ppm (sham) and mean concentrations of 5 ppm (either constant 5 ppm or variable 0 to 10 ppm). Sampling of nNO was performed by using passive aspiration during both breath-holding (634 ppb) or calm tidal breathing (364 ppb, p < 0.0001). The intra-session (between-session) repeatability in terms of coefficient of variation was 16.4% (18.5%) using the tidal-breathing and 8.6% (13.0%) using the breath-holding method, respectively. Atopic subjects demonstrated a significant increase in nNO (breath-holding mean 16%, tidal-breathing mean 32%) after applying a constant ethyl acrylate concentration (5 ppm). Our findings suggest that the less elaborate tidal-breathing method might be sufficient to detect significant changes at a group level. Given a lower coefficient of variation of breath-holding we assume there is an advantage of that approach at an individual level. Further research is needed to validate the usefulness of nNO in the evaluation of irritative, non-allergic responses.

The concentrations of nasal nitric oxide (nNO) vary in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) supposedly depending upon whether the paranasal ostia are open or obstructed. Our aim was to assess whether nNO levels and their response to topical xylometazoline (a local vasoconstrictor used to alleviate nasal congestion) in patients with CRS differ between those with open or obstructed ostia and if the results were altered by the use of nasal corticosteroids. Sixty-six patients with CRS (43% with nasal polyps) or recurrent acute rhinosinusitis and 23 healthy controls were included.

A series of colorful binuclear Schiff bases derived from the different diamine bridges including 1,2- ethylenediamine (bis-Et-SA, bis-Et-4-NEt, bis-Et-5-NO, bis-Et-Naph), 1,2-phenylenediamine (bis-Ph-SA, bis-Ph-4-NEt, bis-Ph-5-NO, bis-Ph-Naph), dicyano-1,2-ethenediamine (bis-CN-SA, bis-CN-4-NEt, bis-CN-5-NO, bis-CN-Naph) have been designed and prepared. The optical properties of these binuclear Schiff base ligands were fully determined by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, and time-dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. The inclusion of D-A systems and/or π-extended systems in these binuclear Schiff base ligands not only enables adjustable RGB light absorption and emission spectra (300~700 nm) but also yields high fluorescence quantum efficiencies of up to 0.

A new class of ligands, ,'-dialkyl-2,6-pyridinediamide (DRPDA), has been designed with the specific intention of exhibiting interchangeable diversity in coordination modes, including organometallic interactions, for the purpose of solvent extraction of elements relevant to the proper treatment of high-level radioactive liquid waste (HLLW) generated after nuclear fuel reprocessing. Consequently, DRPDA has been observed to extract Pd(II) and Zr(IV) from HNO(aq) to 1-octanol in nearly quantitative yields when the selected ligand is sufficiently hydrophobic. However, concomitance of some of other HLLW components were also found.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare lung disease that causes chronic oto-sino-pulmonary disease with irreversible lung damage. Several diagnostic methods exist, but electron microscopy (EM) is the most accurate tool, as it visualizes alterations in the axonemal ultrastructure; however, some patients may present a normal ciliary structure. Therefore, other diagnostic methods have been promoted, such as genetic studies or immunofluorescence of specific markers; nonetheless, they are not very accessible and expensive and even present a high level of false negatives.

The interaction of atomic orbitals at the interface of perovskite oxide heterostructures has been investigated for its profound impact on the band structures and electronic properties, giving rise to unique electronic states and a variety of tunable functionalities. In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation of the optical and electronic properties of epitaxial NdNiO synthesized on a series of single-crystal substrates. Unlike nanofilms synthesized on other substrates, NdNiO on SrTiO (NNO/STO) gives rise to a unique band structure featuring an additional unoccupied band situated above the Fermi level.
