Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for human beings and many other forms of life. Organic selenium from natural foods has greater bioavailability and is safer than inorganic selenium species. In this article, the structural properties and antioxidant activities of a Glycyrrhiza uralensis polysaccharide (GUP) after selenylation modification were investigated. The GUP was extracted by water decoction and ethanol precipitation and purified via protein elimination using the trichloroacetic acid method and column chromatography. The purified product was subsequently modified by the nitric acid-sodium selenite (HNO-NaSeO) method. The selenized GUP (SeGUP) product was characterized by Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and its thermal stability, particle size, and antioxidant activities were investigated. FT-IR analysis indicated that the selenium in SeGUP existed mainly as O-Se-O. The thermal stability and particle size of SeGUP differed significantly from those of GUP. Moreover, compared to GUP, SeGUP exhibited greater antioxidant activities in vitro and in vivo. These results indicate that selenylation modification significantly enhances the antioxidant activity of SeGUP, increasing its potential for application as an antioxidant. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

In this study, a homogeneous polysaccharide, named YDOP-1 was isolated form Dendrobium officinale using hot water extraction and ethanol precipitation method. YDOP-1 was characterized to be a typical O-acetyl-glucomannan with the molecular wight was 13,456 Da. Cell viability and colony forming assay showed that YDOP-1 possess moderate anti-gastric cancer effects.

A novel selenylated low molecular weight apple pectin (Se-LMWAP) was prepared through enzymatic modification combined with selenylation. The physicochemical properties, the structural characterization of Se-LMWAP were evaluated by FT-IR, NMR and SEM. Moreover, the antidiabetic activity and potential mechanism of Se-LMWAP were investigated using high-fat diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 2 diabetic mice.

We have established a mild CuI-catalyzed selenylation of pyrrolo[2,1-]isoquinoline derivatives in the presence of CPBA (-chloroperoxybenzoic acid) at ambient temperature. Corresponding organoselenides have been prepared readily in 53-92% yields. This process can also be expanded to the modification of pyrroles, azaindole, and indoles, delivering the desired heterocyclic selenides in moderate to good yields.
