The study evaluated the physical, mental, and functional outcomes following below-the-knee amputation (BKA) for management of chronic, debilitating lower extremity pain. The hypothesis was that patients who undergo a BKA to alleviate chronic pain achieve a greater level of function, experience decreased pain, and benefit from improved health-related quality of life. Patients who received a BKA attended an orthopaedic clinic and completed questionnaires examining their overall health, functional status, mental health, and pain. Thirty-seven patients were identified as eligible for study participation; 15 agreed to participate. Although most participants continued to experience pain in their residual limb after BKA, they reported their pain decreased to a manageable level. Participants experienced a statistically significant improvement in their perceived physical health. The authors believe a BKA for chronic pain is a reasonable treatment option for patients who continue to experience lower extremity pain after failed medical and surgical management of chronic pain. How do lesions affect limb lengthening in children with Ollier's disease?

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Orthopaedics, Children's Hospital of Fudan University, National Children's Medical Center, 399 Wanyuan Rd, Minhang District, Shanghai, 201102, China.

Purpose: Ollier's disease (multiple enchondromatosis) can cause severe lower limb length discrepancy and deformity in children. Osteotomy and limb lengthening with external fixation can correct the lower extremity deformity. There may be lesions in the osteotomy part (OP), and the internal fixation part of the external fixation(FP).

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain a significant global health burden, particularly in China, where kidney dysfunction (KD) is a key risk factor. This study analyzed trends in the burden of KD-induced CVD and subtypes among the working-age population (25-64 years) in China over the past 30 years and explored its association with age, period, and birth cohort.

Methods: This study extracted data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021, focusing on deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) caused by KD-induced CVD and subtypes, including ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, and lower extremity peripheral artery disease (LEPAD) among 25-64 years globally and in China from 1992 to 2021.

Exploratory analysis of gait mechanics in farmers.

J Occup Environ Hyg

January 2025

Department of Kinesiology & Health Promotion, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky.

Farmers may be at a higher risk of developing hip osteoarthritis (OA) due to the high demands of their occupation. To the authors' knowledge, the gait patterns of farmers that may be associated with hip joint degeneration have yet to be analyzed. Therefore, this study compares gait mechanics between farmers and non-farmers (controls).

Purpose: The present study is to explore the appropriate plantar support force for its effect on improving the collapse of the medial longitudinal arch with flexible flatfoot.

Methods: A finite element model with the plantar fascia attenuation was constructed simulating as flexible flatfoot. The appropriate plantar support force was evaluated.
