Swallow root pectic oligosaccharide fraction (SRO1) from swallow root pectic polysaccharide (SRPP) possessed a molecular size of 831 Da. Structural analysis revealed that it is a rhamnogalacturonan I type, bearing arabinogalactan side chain with β-d-(1→4) galactose along with α-l-Araf (1→5)-α-l-Araf (1→3) structure on α-d-GalA-OAc-(1→2)-α-l-Rha-(1→4)- linear backbone. β-d (1→4) linked galactose being the specific sugar for galectin-3, SRO1 had potentials in inhibiting galectin-3 mediated cancer progression. SRO1 inhibited galectin-3 mediated agglutination, in vitro, effectively with MIC of 1.08 μg/ mL and down regulated mRNA levels of galectin-3 (∼92%) along with its downstream key protein that inhibits apoptosis - survivin (∼78%) suggesting the capability of SRO1 in inhibiting galectin-3 mediated cancer promoting pathway. This is the first report, which highlights the inhibition of interplay of galectin-3 and survivin by a dietary pectic oligosaccharide.

Applicability of biomimetic approach with simulation of plant uptake for assessment of radiocesium availability in soil was investigated. The soil spiked with 137Cs tracer was contacted with wicking material and copper-substituted prussian blue (Cu-PB), which simulate transpirationally induced mass flow and concentration gradient-induced diffusion of radiocesiumin the soil, respectively. Comparison of the removed 137Cs to the wick and the wick + Cu-PB from the soil during the contact period of 12 weeks suggested that the diffusion process has larger contribution than the mass flow process in radiocesium dynamics in root zone.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and it is caused by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia (BG). Currently, there is no definite cure for PD, and available treatments mainly aim to alleviate its symptoms. Due to impaired neurotransmitter-based information transmission in PD, molecular communication-based approaches can be employed as potential solutions to address this issue.

The removal of tumors at the root of the tongue can be challenging due to anatomic constraints (deep location of the root of the tongue, obstruction by the mandible), leading to poor surgical visibility. Clear visibility of the surgical field is crucial for complete excision to reduce recurrence, hence the need to choose an appropriate surgical approach based on the tumor's location and size. In this report, the authors describe a case where a midline mandibulotomy and temporary midline glossectomy were utilized to expose and resect a tumor at the root of the tongue.
