5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a chemotherapeutic that is used to treat solid tumors. However, 5-FU is associated with several side effects, including cardiotoxicity. Considering the importance of the intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICNS) for the heart and that little is known about effects of 5-FU on this nervous system plexus, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate effects 5-FU at a low dose on the ICNS and oxidative and inflammatory effects in the heart in Wistar rats.

Human cancer cells xenografts to assess the efficacy of granulysin-based therapeutics.

Methods Cell Biol

January 2025

Apoptosis, Immunity and Cancer Group, Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS-Aragón), University of Zaragoza, Zaragoza, Spain. Electronic address:

9-kDa Granulysin is a protein present in the granules of human activated cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells. It has been shown to exert cytolytic activity against a wide variety of microbes: bacteria, fungi, yeast and protozoa. Recombinant isolated granulysin is also capable of inducing tumor cell death, so it could be used as an anti-tumor therapy.

Department of Oral Function & Anatomy, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, 2-5-1 Shikata-cho, Kita- ku, Okayama, 700-0914, Japan.

Background: Diabetes treatments by the control of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) is commonly conducted while there are still uncertainties about the mechanisms for the SGLT2 overexpression in kidneys with diabetes. Previously, we have reported that glomeruli and proximal tubules with diabetic nephropathy express toll-like receptor TLR2/4, and that the TLR ligand lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of periodontal pathogens have caused nephropathy in diabetic model mice. Recently, many researchers suggested that the periodontal pathogenic bacteria Fusobacterium (F.

Glucocorticoids on bone remodeling in systemic lupus erythematosus mice.

Pediatr Res

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, Rheumatology and Immunology, Shanghai Children's Hospital, School of medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus requires glucocorticoids for management. This study investigates how glucocorticoids influence bone in a SLE mouse model, focusing on bone mineral density (BMD), microstructure, and remodeling markers.

Methods: MRL/lpr and C57BL/6 mice were administered dexamethasone or saline as a control for 4-weeks.
