Published: February 2018

Background: Functional polysaccharides can be derived from plants (including herbs), animals and microorganisms. They have been widely used in a broad of biomedical applications, such as immunoregulatory agents or drug delivery vehicles. In the past few years, increasing studies have started to develop natural polysaccharides-based biomaterials for various applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Main Body: We discuss in this article the emerging applications of natural polysaccharides-particularly those derived from Chinese medicine-for wound healing. First, we introduce natural polysaccharides of three natural sources and their biological activities. Then, we focus on certain natural polysaccharides with growth factor-binding affinities and their inspired polymeric tools, with an emphasis on how these polysaccharides could possibly benefit wound healing. Finally, we report the latest progress in the discovery of polysaccharides from Chinese medicinal herbs with identified activities favouring tissue repair.

Conclusion: Natural polysaccharides with clearly elucidated compositions/structures, identified cellular activities, as well as desirable physical properties have shown the potential to serve as therapeutic tools for tissue regeneration.

Biodegradable food packaging has gained significant attention owing to environmental concerns. Chitosan (CS), a natural polysaccharide, is popular in packaging films, however, its high hydrophilicity, brittleness, and low mechanical strength limit its use. To improve CS film performance, kafirin (Kaf), glycerol (GE), and tannic acid (TA) were added to create biocomposite films.

Protein-polysaccharide complex carrier can solve the problem of insufficient stability of Monascus pigments (MPs), a kind of natural pigments, against heat and light. It also has the function to stabilize Pickering emulsion (PE) that can be used as fat replacer in meat products. In this study, heat denatured whey protein (HWP) and pectin modified by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA-pectin) were prepared into complex by adding Ca loaded with MPs.

This article reviews the latest research progress on ultrasound-assisted extraction of active substances from Muxu, including polysaccharides, polyphenols, leaf proteins, anthocyanins, total flavonoids, and total saponins, in order to provide theoretical references for the extraction of active substances from Muxu. At the same time, its medicinal value, feeding value, ecological value, edible value, and ornamental value were analyzed and summarized. Flavonoids, saponins, and polysaccharides in the bioactive substances of Muxu have good effects on improving animal productivity, enhancing immune function, and improving animal health.

Complex wound closure scenarios necessitate the development of advanced wound dressings that can effectively address the challenges of filling irregularly shaped wounds and managing fatigue failures encountered in daily patient activities. To tackle these issues, we develop a multifunctional hydrogel from natural polysaccharides and polypeptides with injectability and self-healing properties for promoting full-time and multipurpose wound healing. Synthesized through dynamic Schiff base linkages between oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA), ε-polylysine (ε-PL), and quaternized chitosan (QCS), the OHA/ε-PL/QCS hydrogel can gel rapidly within 50 s.
