AI Article Synopsis

  • Organic materials are gaining popularity as sustainable electrode materials for future batteries, but their electrochemical mechanisms are not well-studied due to a lack of effective analytical techniques.
  • A new in operando attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy method has been developed to monitor infrared-active band changes during reduction/oxidation in lithium batteries.
  • This method has been applied to analyze various organic polymers and specifically investigates the redox reaction of poly(anthraquinonyl sulfide) in magnesium batteries, revealing a mechanism involving the reduction of carbonyl bonds.

Article Abstract

Organic materials are receiving an increasing amount of attention as electrode materials for future post lithium-ion batteries due to their versatility and sustainability. However, their electrochemical reaction mechanism has seldom been investigated. This is a direct consequence of a lack of straightforward and broadly available analytical techniques. Herein, a straightforward in operando attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy method is developed that allows visualization of changes of all infrared active bands that occur as a consequence of reduction/oxidation processes. In operando infrared spectroscopy is applied to the analysis of three different organic polymer materials in lithium batteries. Moreover, this in operando method is further extended to investigation of redox reaction mechanism of poly(anthraquinonyl sulfide) in a magnesium battery, where a reduction of carbonyl bond is demonstrated as a mechanism of electrochemical activity. Conclusions done by the in operando results are complemented by synthesis of model compound and density functional theory calculation of infrared spectra.

In this study, we used desert soil from Gansu, China, as a sample to propose a method for designing hyperspectral stealth coatings against desert soil backgrounds within the spectral range of 400-2500 nm, and the corresponding coating was prepared. Firstly, the correlation between the composition and typical spectral detected characteristics of the desert soil was systematically analyzed. It was found that the color and the spectrum of the desert soil in the range of 400-1000 nm were influenced by different types of iron oxides.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a commonly used endocrine-disrupting chemical found in high levels in wastewater worldwide. Aerobic denitrification is a promising alternative to conventional nitrogen removal processes. However, the effects of BPA on this novel nitrogen removal process have rarely been reported.

Melanin with antioxidant and antibacterial properties can be used in food, cosmetics, biotechnology, and other fields, but its insolubility become a main challenge hindering for its application. In this study, water-soluble melanin produced by the novel species Streptomyces vilmorinianum YP1 was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UVvisible spectroscopy (with an absorption peak at 220nm), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The glycosyltransferase gene ORF14 was knocked out, which improved the production of water-soluble melanin by inhibiting competitive pathway.

The tablet diversion strategy, based on in-line near-infrared (NIR) tablet press feed frame measurements, can be a key component of both batch and continuous oral solid dose manufacturing processes. It enables real-time, high-frequency monitoring and control, enhancing process understanding and compliance compared to conventional interval-based sampling methods. Central to this strategy are NIR spectrometers, which serve as PAT systems for in-line blend uniformity monitoring in the feed of the tablet press.
