This work investigates the sorption of heavy metals by low-cost, byproducts such as charcoal fines (CF), waste green sand, and rice husk ash, in order to examine the feasibility of their use as alternative filter materials for metal-contaminated waters. The sorption of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn was investigated in batch experiments and sorption isotherms were constructed. The three byproducts showed high metal removal efficiencies (>95%, regardless of the metal concentration tested). The highest metal sorption distribution coefficients were obtained for CF, with maximum values within the 10-10 L kg range for all the target metals. The sorption isotherms were satisfactorily fitted using the Freundlich equation and a linear model, the latter only being valid for initial metal concentrations lower than 0.4 mmol L. Sorption reversibility was very low, with desorption yields lower than 2% and desorption distribution coefficients often higher than 10 L kg. The values of the sorption and desorption parameters indicated that the use of these materials, especially CF, could constitute a low-cost alternative for the remediation of contaminated waters.

Extensive anthropogenic activity has led to the accumulation of organic and inorganic contaminants in diverse ecosystems, which presents significant challenges for the environment and its inhabitants. Utilizing microalgae as a bioremediation tool can present a potential solution to these challenges. Microalgae have gained significant attention as a promising biotechnological solution for detoxifying environmental pollutants.

Enhancing the passivation of heavy metals and increasing organic matter content during the composting of sewage sludge poses significant challenges for maximizing its utilization value. Results indicated that in the control, biochar, microbial agents and microbial agents-loaded biochar (BCLMA) groups, BCLMA addition led to a higher composting temperature, with increases of 17-62% in humic acid, 25-73% in germination index, and 30-35% in organic matter consumption. And the residual fraction of Cu, Zn, Cr and Cd were increased by 30%, 12%, 22%, and 17%, respectively.

This study investigates levels of cuproptosis markers in Wilson disease (WD) and their role in the occurrence and development of WD. We retrospectively collected clinical data from 76 patients with Leipzig score ≥ 4 hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of Chinese Medicine from January 2023 to September 2023. The participants were given copper chelators (sodium dimercaptosulphonate (20 mg·kg-1), 4 courses of treatment, 32 days).

Cadmium is a non-essential element and neurotoxin that causes neuroinflammation, which leads to neurodegenerative diseases and brain cancer. To date, there are no specific or effective therapeutic agents to control inflammation and alleviate cadmium-induced progressive destruction of brain cells. Fluoroquinolones (FQs), widely used antimicrobials with effective blood-brain barrier penetration, show promise in being repurposed as anti-inflammatory drugs.

Purpose: Zirconia dental implants show excellent biocompatibility and tissue integration, low affinity for plaque, and favorable biomechanical properties. However, these objective measures do not adequately replicate the patient's perception. This systematic review evaluated the evidence on patient-reported outcome (PROs) in zirconia dental implant treatment.
