The correct choice of a stone aggregate for railway ballast is directly related to the stability, safety, efficiency, and maintenance costs of the track. The aggregate must meet several criteria to ensure it is the most appropriate material. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate four distinct stones: two granites, a diabase, and a basalt, all mined in the eastern region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, regarding their applicability as ballast.

Background: The performance of blood-based phosphorylated tau (pTau) immunoassays to detect asymptomatic Alzheimer's disease (AD) has important implications for therapeutic trials. pTau217 is often recommended as the preferred epitope due to its high fold changes in AD. The current study investigates the ability of a novel pTau217 assay to predict the dynamic phase of amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation in comparison to the best-performing pTau181 assay.

Background: Amyloid and alpha synuclein proteins are brain biomarkers of different neurodegenerative diseases, many years before symptoms. We have shown that imaging dye-free with polarized light makes retinal amyloid deposits visible as a biomarker, in the brain, of amyloid and Alzheimer's disease (AD) severity. Here, we extend to presumed retinal alpha synuclein deposits in those with brain pathology consistent with alpha synuclein.

Background: Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are at greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous studies have shown that physical exercise is a protective factor against the clinical evolution of dementia in MCI. Lower muscle strength levels are associated with a greater risk of AD incidence.

Background: The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is an important animal model in neuroscience and neurological diseases, presenting primate-specific evolutionary features such as an expanded frontal cortex. We established a new consortium with funding support from the National Institute on Aging to generate, characterize, and validate MArmosets as Research MOdels of AD (MARMO-AD). This consortium develops and studies gene-edited marmoset models carrying genetic risk for AD, comparing them against wild-type aging marmosets from birth throughout their lifespan, using non-invasive longitudinal assessments.
