Interocular retinal asymmetry and cognitive frailty: A prospective cohort study.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, College of Public Health, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

Introduction: The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) or ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) is associated with cognitive impairment. However, the relationship between retinal asymmetry and cognitive frailty (CF) remains unknown.

Methods: Two hundred twenty-two community-dwelling older adults were assessed starting in 2015 and underwent biennial cognitive and frailty evaluations until 2022.

Tunable Electron Correlation in Epitaxial 1T-TaS Spirals.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Department of Materials Science & Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, 30013, Taiwan.

Tantalum disulfide (1T-TaS), being a Mott insulator with strong electron correlation, is highlighted for diverse collective quantum states in the 2D lattice, including charge density wave (CDW), spin liquid, and unconventional superconductivity. The Mott physics embedded in the 2D triangular CDW lattice has raised debates on stacking-dependent properties because interlayer interactions are sensitive to van der Waals (vdW) spacing. However, control of interlayer distance remains a challenge.

Aldehydes are organic compounds containing a carbonyl group found exogenously or produced by normal metabolic processes and their accumulation can lead to toxicity if not cleared. Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) are NAD(P)-dependent enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of such aldehydes and prevent their accumulation. Along with this primary detoxification function, the known 19 human isoforms of ALDHs, which act on different substrates, are also involved in various physiological and developmental processes.

Inverse design in photonic crystals.

Nanophotonics

April 2024

State Key Laboratory of Surface Physics, Key Laboratory of Micro- and Nano-Photonic Structures (Ministry of Education), and Department of Physics, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, China.

Photonic crystals are periodic dielectric structures that possess a wealth of physical characteristics. Owing to the unique way they interact with the light, they provide new degrees of freedom to precisely modulate the electromagnetic fields, and have received extensive research in both academia and industry. At the same time, fueled by the advances in computer science, inverse design strategies are gradually being used to efficiently produce on-demand devices in various domains.
