The possible usefulness of Russian surnames as a quasi-genetic marker in the population study is analysed. Two approaches for the populations of different hierarchical levels are used. The coefficients of correlations between the matrices of genetical (based on gene frequencies in the populations) and quasi-genetical (based on surnames frequencies in the populations) distances were determined. The mean correlation coefficient is 0.315 +/- 0.15. Genetical and quasi-genetical distances and the level of gamete exchange between populations are connected, being reversely dependent. The mean correlation coefficients are: -0.63 +/- 0.13 and -0.23 +/- 0.16. The correlation coefficient for matrices of quasi-genetical and geographical distances was 0.39 +/- 0.08, this being -0.42 +/- 0.08 for matrices of quasi-genetical distance and geometrical mean of population dimensions. It is shown that surnames can replace genetic markers in description of the population genetic structure and in the study of the processes influencing this structure.

The transformations from the primitive cells of the centered Bravais lattices to the corresponding centered cells have conventionally been listed as three-by-three matrices that transform three-space lattice vectors. Using those three-by-three matrices when working in the six-dimensional space of lattices represented as Selling scalars as used in Delone (Delaunay) reduction, one could transform to the three-space representation, apply the three-by-three matrices and then back-transform to the six-space representation, but it is much simpler to have the equivalent six-by-six matrices and apply them directly. The general form of the transformation from the three-space matrix to the corresponding matrix operating on Selling scalars (expressed in space S) is derived, and the particular Smatrices for the centered Delone types are listed.

Identifying author heritage using surname data: An application for Russian surnames.

This research article puts forward a method to identify the national heritage of authors based on the morphology of their surnames. Most studies in the field use variants of dictionary-based surname methods to identify ethnic communities, an approach that suffers from methodological limitations. Using the public file of ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) identifiers in 2015, we developed a surname-based identification method and applied it to infer Russian heritage from suffix-based morphological regularities.

According to published studies in the field, random choice and random estimation are the only options for tackling judgment and decision-making tasks where the elements from which to infer a required criteria are not recognized. In Campitelli and Labollita (2010), participants were asked to estimate the nationality and Elo rating of chess players based on their surnames. In the present study I re-analyze those 123 participants from Campitelli and Labollita (2010) who declared not to have recognized any player.
