Coffee contains hydroxyhydroquinone (HHQ). HHQ is one of the by-products released during bean roasting. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the bioactivity of HHQ to predict its beneficial or adverse effects on humans. We studied zinc-dependent and independent actions of commercially procured synthetic HHQ in rat thymocytes using flow cytometric techniques with propidium iodide, FluoZin-3-AM, 5-chloromethylfluorescein diacetate, and annexin V-FITC. HHQ at 1050 µM elevated intracellular Zn levels by releasing intracellular Zn. HHQ at 10 µM increased cellular thiol content in a zinc-dependent manner. However, HHQ at 30-50 µM reduced cellular thiol content. Although the latter actions of HHQ (30-50 µM) were suggested to increase cell vulnerability to oxidative stress, HHQ at 0.3-100 µM significantly protected cells against oxidative stress induced by HO. The process of cell death induced by HO was delayed by HHQ, although both HO and HHQ increased the population of annexin V-positive living cells. However, HHQ at 10-30 µM promoted cell death induced by A23187, a calcium ionophore. HHQ at 10-30 µM exerted contrasting effects on cell death caused by oxidative stress and Ca overload. Because HHQ is considered to possess diverse cellular actions, coffee with reduced amount of HHQ may be preferable to avoid potential adverse effects.

The control of avocado pests and diseases heavily relies on the use of several types of pesticides, some of which are strictly monitored or not internationally accepted. New sources of bioactive molecules produced by phytopathogen-inhibiting microorganisms offer an excellent alternative for the control of pests and diseases. This study explores the potential antagonistic action against phytopathogenic microorganisms, using bacterial strains obtained from avocado thrips.

Aluminium (Al)-tolerant beneficial bacteria confer resistance to Al toxicity to crops in widely distributed acidic soils. However, the mechanism by which microbial consortia maintain Al tolerance under acid and Al toxicity stress remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that a soil bacterial consortium composed of Rhodococcus erythropolis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibit greater Al tolerance than either bacterium alone.

The 48-item Healthy Habits Questionnaire (HHQ-48) was developed to (1) monitor positive changes in family lifestyles following engagement in the Parents Plus Healthy Families (PP-HF) parent training programme and (2) be utilised as a standalone measure in clinical settings to identify and track problematic influential behaviours amongst families of children in weight-management services. This study aimed to develop and validate a brief version of the HHQ-48. The scale was administered to a cross-sectional community sample ( = 480), and on two occasions to a control sample ( = 50) and an experimental sample ( = 40) from a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the PP-HF programme to assess test-retest reliability and sensitivity to change respectively.
