Hierarchical VOOH hollow spheres with low crystallinity composed of nanoparticles were prepared by a facile and template-free method, which involved a precipitation of precursor microspheres in aqueous solution at room temperature and subsequent hydrothermal reaction. Quasi-solid-state symmetric and asymmetric supercapacitor (SSC and ASC) devices were fabricated using hierarchical VOOH hollow spheres as the electrodes, and the electrochemical properties of the VOOH//VOOH SSC device and the VOOH//AC ASC device were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Results demonstrated that the electrochemical performance of the VOOH//AC ASC device was better than that of the VOOH//VOOH SSC device. After 3000 cycles, the specific capacitance of the VOOH//AC ASC device retains 83% of the initial capacitance, while the VOOH//VOOH SSC device retains only 7.7%. Findings in this work proved that hierarchical VOOH hollow spheres could be a promising candidate as an ideal electrode material for supercapacitor devices.

Atom-scale modulation of electronic regulation in nonprecious-based electrocatalysts is promising for efficient catalytic activities. Here, hierarchically hollow VOOH nanostructures are rationally constructed by partial iron substitution and systematically investigated for electrocatalytic water splitting. Benefiting from the hierarchically stable scaffold configuration, highly electrochemically active surface area, the synergistic effect of the active metal atoms, and optimal adsorption energies, the 3% Fe (mole ratio) substituted electrocatalyst (VOOH-3Fe) exhibits a low overpotential of 90 and 195 mV at 10 mA cm for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, respectively, superior than the other samples with a different substituted ratio.

Synthetic montroseite VOOH has been successfully prepared via a simple template-free hydrothermal route on a large scale for the first time-after sixty years of delay. The as-obtained sample shows a hierarchical morphology of urchin-like nanoarchitecture with hollow interiors consisting of well-crystalline nanorods standing vertically on the shell surface. Time-dependent experiments illustrated that these hierarchical hollow nanourchins were formed through the hydrolysis-driven Kirkendall effect coupled with a new-phased vanadium oxyhydroxide V(10)O(14)(OH)(2) precursor templated approach.
