Published: April 2019

Background: Few methods have been described for measuring hindfoot alignment from an anteroposterior view. The objective of this study was to compare two methods of angular measurement based on the views of Meary and Saltzman.

Methods: Thirty asymptomatic volunteers were included. Four radiographs were performed: the views of Meary and Saltzman with parallel feet and with the Fick correction. The reproducibility was determined by the inter- and intraobserver variability (ICC).

Results: Meary's method revealed a mean valgus angulation of 3.9° (SD 3.47°). The reliability was extremely variable with a mean ICC of 0.59. The best reproducibility was obtained with Meary's method with and without Fick correction.

Conclusion: The results of this study show that the reliability of the angular measurements depends on the radiographic view and measurement method chosen. The lateral Fick correction did not counteract the influence of tibial rotation. The same method should be used consistently.

Background: The management of anterior colliculus fractures in combination with deltoid ligament injuries is a topic of debate, and there is a need to improve surgical outcomes. The purpose of the present study was to describe the application of a modified double-row suture bridge technique and evaluate its early clinical outcomes in the management of anterior colliculus fracture combined with deltoid ligament injury.

Methods: From 2020 to 2022, 12 patients with anterior colliculus fracture combined with deltoid ligament injury were treated using a modified double-row suture bridge technique.

Impact of dorsal closing wedge calcaneal osteotomy on hindfoot alignment and biomechanics of patients with insertional achilles tendinopathy; A weightbearing CT-based simulation study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how dorsal closing wedge calcaneal osteotomy (DCWCO) influences hindfoot alignment and the power of the gastrocnemius-soleus (G-S) muscle complex in patients with insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT).
  • Using CT scans of six patients, researchers created various foot models to analyze the biomechanics of different osteotomy placements (anterior vs. posterior) and resulted in 42-foot models.
  • Findings suggest that the anterior osteotomy significantly impacts foot alignment and reduces the Böhler angle, while the posterior osteotomy leads to greater decompression of the Achilles tendon.

Background: Three-dimensional weightbearing CT (WBCT) has been widely used to assess foot and ankle alignment. However, most current measurement methods are based on 2-dimensional concepts-distance, long axis, angulation, etc-and are sensitive to changes in orientation of the WBCT images. This study demonstrated how changes in positioning of the image can significantly influence the evaluation of hindfoot alignment.

Background/objectives: To assess magnetic resonance image (MRI) findings in children and adolescents with atraumatic non-overload ankle pain and to identify potential anatomic risk factors.

Methods: In total, 310 MRIs of 6- to 20-year-old patients were evaluated regarding detectable ankle pathologies. A total of 147 patients (68 males; 79 females) suffered from atraumatic non-overload ankle pain.
