Membrane potential (V) depolarization occurs immediately following cerebral ischemia and is devastating for the astrocyte homeostasis and neuronal signaling. Previously, an excessive release of extracellular K and glutamate has been shown to underlie an ischemia-induced V depolarization. Ischemic insults should impair membrane ion channels and disrupt the physiological ion gradients. However, their respective contribution to ischemia-induced neuronal and glial depolarization and loss of neuronal excitability are unanswered questions. A short-term oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) was used for the purpose of examining the acute effect of ischemic conditions on ion channel activity and physiological K gradient in neurons and glial cells. We show that a 30 min OGD treatment exerted no measurable damage to the function of membrane ion channels in neurons, astrocytes, and NG2 glia. As a result of the resilience of membrane ion channels, neuronal spikes last twice as long as our previously reported 15 min time window. In the electrophysiological analysis, a 30 min OGD-induced dissipation of transmembrane K gradient contributed differently in brain cell depolarization: severe in astrocytes and neurons, and undetectable in NG2 glia. The discrete cellular responses to OGD corresponded to a total loss of 69% of the intracellular K contents in hippocampal slices as measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). A major brain cell depolarization mechanism identified here is important for our understanding of cerebral ischemia pathology. Additionally, further understanding of the resilient response of NG2 glia to ischemia-induced intracellular K loss and depolarization should facilitate the development of future stroke therapy.

This study investigated the mechanisms employed by exogenous dopamine application in alleviating chilling injury in kiwifruits during storage at 1 °C for 120 days. Our results indicated that dopamine treatment at 150 µM alleviated chilling injury in kiwifruits during storage at 1 °C for 120 days. By 150 µM dopamine application, higher SUMO E3 ligase (SIZ1) and target of rapamycin (TOR) genes expression accompanied by lower poly(ADP-Ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) and sucrose non-fermenting 1-related kinase 1 (SnRK1) genes expression was associated with higher salicylic acid, ATP, NADPH and proline accumulation in kiwifruits during storage at 1 °C for 120 days.

Lipids play an essential role in synaptic function, significantly impacting synaptic physiology through their dynamic nature and signaling capabilities. Membrane lipids, including cholesterol, phospholipids, and gangliosides, are crucial for synaptic organization and function. They act as structural integrators and signaling molecules, guiding vesicle intracellular movement and regulating enzyme activity to support neuronal activity.

Cellulose has outstanding potential for application in energy storage batteries due to its high temperature resistance, high electrolyte affinity, renewability, and suppression of the shuttle effect, but single cellulose membranes still suffer from problems such as inhomogeneous pore distribution and unstable three-dimensional network structure. In this study, a green and sustainable regenerative cellulose (RC)/sodium alginate (SA) gel electrolyte membrane is developed by sol-gel process, the double crosslinked network scaffold centered on Zn was constructed by the synergistic hydrogen-bonding and metal ion- coordination network, the stable and uniform pore structure was also formed. The obtained RC-SA gel electrolyte membrane exhibits outstanding performance, featuring a dual crosslinked network with abundant pore structure and numerous polar groups that effectively enhance Zn transport, significantly improving battery cycling performance.

Of the ions involved in myocardial function, Ca is the most important. Ca is crucial to the process that allows myocardium to repeatedly contract and relax in a well-organized fashion; it is the process called excitation-contraction coupling. In order, therefore, for accurate comprehension of the physiology of the heart, it is fundamentally important to understand the detailed mechanism by which the intracellular Ca concentration is regulated to elicit excitation-contraction coupling.

Developing biomass-based adsorbents with superior uranium uptake performance is imperative yet challenging for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Herein, we constructed a novel lignin-based adsorbent (DLP@PAO) with dual functional groups and enhanced structural stability via ingenious integration of lignin and polyamidoxime. The two-step modification strategy was innovatively employed to phosphorylate lignin, significantly enhancing the phosphorylation efficiency and achieving an over eight-fold increase in the U(VI) uptake capacity of lignin.
