Background: Hypothermic pulsatile machine perfusion (HPMP) decreases the rate of delayed graft function (DGF) in kidney grafts, compared with cold storage. However, it is not clear its use in the different subgroups of grafts. The objective was to review systematically all studies with better methodologic quality that compare HPMP versus cold storage.
Methods: A systematic review was performed. The sources were Pubmed, Pubmed Central, Cochrane Library, Clinical Key, and Ovid. All randomized controlled trials that compared HPMP versus cold storage in renal grafts from human donors were considered. Outcomes analyzed were: percentage of DGF, primary nonfunction (PNF), and graft function in each group and for the different types of grafts, brain-death donors (DBDs), and different subgroups of donors after circulatory death (DCDs).
Results: Twelve clinical trials, out of 9,867 titles, were included. HPMP improved DGF overall, as well as in DBDs and DCDs. The relative risks [RRs] were 0.79 (95% CI, 0.71-0.88), 0.85 (95% CI, 0.74-0.98), and 0.75 (95% CI, 0.61-0.92), respectively. There were no differences in PNF overall and for DBDs or DCDs. The RRs were 0.92 (95% CI, 0.73-1.16), 0.78 (95% CI, 0.22-2.73), and 1.13 (95% CI, 0.73-1.77), respectively. However, analysis with the better quality studies, overall RR for PNF was 0.62 (95% CI, 0.39-0.96). There were no differences between the graft function at 3 months after transplantation.
Conclusions: HPMP moderately improved the DGF results in grafts from cadaver donors of all types. HPMP could improve the PNF in grafts from DBDs, although more clinical trials are needed to prove that.

Background: Machine perfusion (MP), including hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (HOPE), dual HOPE, normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), NMP ischemia-free liver transplantation (NMP-ILT), and controlled oxygenated rewarming (COR), is increasingly being investigated to improve liver graft quality from extended criteria donors and donors after circulatory death and expand the donor pool. This network meta-analysis investigates the comparative efficacy and safety of various liver MP strategies versus traditional static cold storage (SCS).
Methods: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing liver transplantation (LT) outcomes between SCS and MP techniques.

Background: Kidney transplantation (KT) is the most effective treatment for end-stage renal disease. End-ischemic hypothermic machine perfusion (EI-HMP) has emerged as a promising method for preserving grafts before transplantation. This study aimed to compare graft function recovery in KT recipients of deceased brain-death (DBD) grafts preserved with EI-HMP versus static cold storage (SCS).

This study compared the effects of seed treatment with low-pressure cold plasma (CP) and atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma on morpho-biochemical traits in Bertoni plants cultivated by two methods: in soil and aeroponics. We investigated the impact of the treatments on the germination, plant growth, and content of secondary metabolites, namely steviol glycosides (SGs), rebaudioside A (RebA), and stevioside (Stev), as well as phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Seeds were treated for 2, 5, and 7 min with CP or DBD and 5 min with vacuum six days before sowing.

Background: Ex situ machine perfusion of the donor liver, such as dual hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (DHOPE), is increasingly used in liver transplantation. Although DHOPE reduces ischemia/reperfusion-related complications after liver transplantation, data on cost-effectiveness are lacking. Our objective was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of DHOPE in donation after circulatory death (DCD) liver transplantation.

Background: Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (UCLR) is a common elbow procedure in baseball pitchers. Previous studies of Major League Baseball pitchers identified the weather as a potential risk factor, as warmer climates enable more annual playing time and increase overuse injury risks.
Purpose: To determine whether weather conditions play a role in UCLR rates and timing for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (D1) collegiate pitchers in the United States.
