AI Article Synopsis

  • The study investigates the role of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in cognitive function following ischemic stroke, specifically focusing on its impact on learning and memory.
  • Male mice with and without eNOS underwent different surgical procedures, and their cognitive abilities were evaluated over 28 days post-surgery using various tests.
  • Results indicated that mice lacking eNOS showed significant cognitive deficits in spatial memory tasks compared to wild-type mice, linking these issues to reduced activation of certain brain immune cells and lower levels of interferon-gamma in the brain.

Article Abstract

Objectives: Cognitive dysfunction and dementia are common following ischemic stroke. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) has been found to play an important role in neurologic function and cognition. The purpose of the present study was to assess the specific role of eNOS in cognitive performance after stroke.

Design: Male wild-type and mice lacking eNOS (eNOS) underwent middle cerebral artery occlusion or sham-surgery. Primary outcomes were repeated measures of neurologic score, limb asymmetry, sensory/motor function, and spatial memory/learning assessed at intervals up to 28 days postsurgery. Group differences in brain microglia activation and infiltration and levels of interferon-gamma were examined.

Results: There was no genotype × surgery interaction effect on the pattern of change in neurologic score, limb asymmetry, or sensory motor function across the 28 days postsurgery. In the Morris water maze, eNOS-/- middle cerebral artery occlusion mice displayed learning and memory deficits not evident in wild-type middle cerebral artery occlusion mice. Poorer spatial memory and learning in eNOS-/- middle cerebral artery occlusion mice was associated with a reduction in the number of activated microglia in the striatum on the lesion side and decreased brain tissue levels of interferon-gamma.

Conclusions: This study's data support a role for eNOS in cognitive performance after stroke. This finding may lead to the development of novel interventions to treat poststroke cognitive deficits.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of the deep learning in generating T2 weighted (T2W) images from diffusion-weighted imaging b0 images.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 53 patients who underwent head magnetic resonance imaging between September 1 and September 4, 2023. Each b0 image was matched with a corresponding T2-weighted image.

Background: Observational studies suggest that hypertension affects brain cortical structure. However, the potential causal association has yet to be entirely determined. Thus, we aim to assess the causality between hypertension and abnormal cortical structure.

Introduction: The normative relationship between lumbar intervertebral disc space height (DSH) and neuroforaminal dimensions (NFD) has yet to be defined.

Research Question: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between lumbar DSH and NFD using computed tomography (CT), accounting for influences of patient demographic and anthropometric characteristics.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed CT imaging of 350 female and 350 male patients.
