This joint Optics Express and Optical Materials Express feature issue presents a collection of nine papers on the topic of halide perovskites for optoelectronics. Perovskite materials have attracted significant attention over the past four years, initially for their outstanding performance in thin film solar cells, but more recently for applications in light-emitting devices (LEDs and lasers), photodetectors and nonlinear optics. At the same time, there is still much more to learn about the fundamental properties of these materials, and how these depend on composition, processing, and exposure to the environment. This feature issue provides a snapshot of some of the latest research in this rapidly-evolving multidisciplinary field.

The inadequate thermal insulation of the building envelope contributes significantly to the high power consumption of air conditioners in houses. A crucial factor in raising a building's energy efficiency involves utilizing bricks with high thermal resistance. This issue is accompanied by another critical challenge: recycling and disposing of waste in a way that is both economically and environmentally beneficial, including using it to fuel industrial growth, in order to reduce the harmful effects of waste on the environment as waste generation in our societies grows.

In current alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacements (TMJRs) typically the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) insertion is sacrificed, affecting joint function. This study assesses a novel additively manufactured TMJR (CADskills BV, Gent, Belgium) designed to enable LPM reinsertion through a scaffold feature on the implant. Thirteen TMJRs were implanted in Swifter crossbreed sheep, with follow-up CT scans after 288 days to evaluate LPM reintegration.

Intermetallic Layers with Tuned Na Nucleation and Transport for Anode-Free Sodium Metal Batteries.

Nano Lett

January 2025

Department of Applied Physics and Research Institute for Advanced Manufacturing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Hong Kong 999077, China.

Sodium metal batteries without pre-deposited Na (anode-free) and with a limited amount of Na metal (anode-less) have attracted increasing attention due to their competitive energy density and the high abundance of sodium. However, severe interfacial issues result in poor cycling stability and low Coulombic efficiency. Here, the lightweight interphase layers composed of intermetallic nanoparticles (Sn-Cu and Sn-Ni) are applied to improve Na plating/stripping behaviors.

Local field potential (LFP) recordings using chronically implanted sensing-enabled stimulators are a powerful tool for indexing symptom presence and severity in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, and for enhancing our neurophysiological understanding of brain processes. LFPs have gained interest as input signals for closed-loop deep brain stimulation (DBS) and can be used to inform DBS parameter selection. LFP recordings using chronically implanted sensing-enabled stimulators have various implementational challenges.

Optimizing Transformer-Based Network via Advanced Decoder Design for Medical Image Segmentation.

Biomed Phys Eng Express

January 2025

Shandong University, No. 72, Binhai Road, Jimo, Qingdao City, Shandong Province, Qingdao, 266200, CHINA.

U-Net is widely used in medical image segmentation due to its simple and flexible architecture design. To address the challenges of scale and complexity in medical tasks, several variants of U-Net have been proposed. In particular, methods based on Vision Transformer (ViT), represented by Swin UNETR, have gained widespread attention in recent years.
