Electron localization function analysis reveals the details of a charge induced hydrogen detachment mechanism of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, identified recently to be responsible for phototautomerization of the molecule. In this process vertical excitation to the πσ* state is followed by the barrier-less migration of a H atom along the N-H bond toward the conical intersection with the S0 ground state. The most striking feature revealed for the πσ* state is partial ejection of σ* electrons outside the molecule, even beyond the NH group, at the Franck-Condon point. Further gradual spatial localization of the electron around the proton moving along the N-H stretching coordinate gives a plausible explanation for the repulsive character of the πσ* potential energy surface with the proton wading through the region of space where some negative charge is accumulated ('a virtual acceptor'), dragging some electron density. This mechanism resembles the one postulated for the hydrogen transfer from a donor molecule (D-H) to an acceptor one (A) in a class of vertically excited molecules with a preexisting inter- or intramolecular D-HA motif, even though the acceptor molecule is absent. The present analysis demonstrates also that the bond evolution and changes in the electron density along the excited state reaction path can be effectively studied with the use of an electron localization function.

In addition to the known therapeutic indications for cannabidiol, its administration by inhalation appears to be of great interest. Indeed, there is evidence of cannabidiol's efficacy in several physiological pathways, suggesting its potential for a wide range of applications for both local and systemic pulmonary administration like cancers. Significant advances in pulmonary drug delivery have led to innovative strategies to address the challenges of increasing the respirable fraction of drugs and standardizing inhalable products.

Cryo-EM reveals cholesterol binding in the lysosomal GPCR-like protein LYCHOS.

Nat Struct Mol Biol

Division of Nephrology and Kidney Research Institute, State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Cholesterol plays a pivotal role in modulating the activity of mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTOR1), thereby regulating cell growth and metabolic homeostasis. LYCHOS, a lysosome-localized G-protein-coupled receptor-like protein, emerges as a cholesterol sensor and is capable of transducing the cholesterol signal to affect the mTORC1 function. However, the precise mechanism by which LYCHOS recognizes cholesterol remains unknown.

Enhancing Catalytic Removal of Autoexhaust Soot Particles via the Modulation of Interfacial Oxygen Vacancies in Cu/CeO Catalysts.

The purification efficiency of autoexhaust carbon strongly depends on the heterogeneous interface structure between active metal and oxide, which can modulate the local electronic structure of defect sites to promote the activation of reactant molecules. Herein, the high-dispersion CuO clusters supported on the well-defined CeO nanorods were prepared using the complex deposition slow method. The formation of heteroatomic Cu-O-Ce interfacial structural units as active sites can capture electrons to achieve activation of the NO and O molecules.

Effect of Exact Exchange on the Energy Landscape in Self-Consistent Field Theory.

Density functional approximations can reduce the spin symmetry breaking observed for self-consistent field (SCF) solutions compared to Hartree-Fock theory, but the amount of exact Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange appears to be a key determinant in broken symmetry. To elucidate the precise role of exact exchange, we investigate the energy landscape of unrestricted Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham density functional theory for benzene and square cyclobutadiene, which provide paradigmatic examples of closed-shell and open-shell electronic structures, respectively. We find that increasing the amount of exact exchange leads to more local SCF minima, which can be characterized as combinatorial arrangements of unpaired electrons in the carbon π system.

Biomimetic Confined Assembly of Plasmonic CuS from Electronic Waste for Rapid Photothermal Disinfection.

ACS Nano

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resources Reuse, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China.

Photothermal disinfection (PTD) offers promising potential for water purification due to its sustainable and broad-spectrum bactericidal properties, although it is hindered by slow charge separation in photosensitizers. Herein, we present a plasma-mediated PTD technique utilizing an efficient localized heating effect induced by incident light at specific wavelengths for rapid bacterial inactivation. A metallic CuS photosensitizer, derived from electronic waste through a biomimetic transmembrane confined-assembled strategy, facilitates collective and coherent oscillation of free electrons around Cu atoms in the near-infrared range.
