is the most common fungal pathogen associated with maize ear rot in Tanzania. In a two-year trial, we investigated the efficacy of crop protection (insecticide and/or fungicide) and fertilizer (nitrogen and/or phosphorus) treatments in reducing the occurrence of and its mycotoxins in maize grown in Tanzania. Seasonal differences were seen to have a substantial influence on the incidence and severity of insect infestation, ear and kernel rot, biomass of and contamination with fumonisins. With regard to the application of fertilizers, it was concluded that the impact on maize stalk borer injury, symptoms and fumonisin levels was not significant, whereas crop protection significantly reduced maize damage. The application of an insecticide was most effective in reducing insect injury and as a result of the reduced insect injury the insecticide treatment also resulted in a significant decrease in symptoms. In 2014, fumonisin levels were also significantly lower in maize treated with an insecticide. Additionally, significant positive correlations between insect damage and symptoms were observed. In conclusion, this study clearly shows that application of an insecticide alone or in combination with a fungicide at anthesis significantly reduces insect damage and consequently reduces infection and associated fumonisin contamination.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a type of head-to-tail closed RNA molecules, have been implicated in various aspects of plant development and stress responses through transcriptome sequencing; however, the precise functional roles of circRNAs in plants remain poorly understood. In this study, we identified a highly expressed circular RNA, circZmMED16, derived from exon 8 of the mediator complex subunit 16 (ZmMED16) across different maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines using circRNA-seq analysis.

The activin cascade is activated when a pair of extracellular ligand (Myoglianin, Myo; Activin β, Actβ; Dawdle, Daw) binds to two pairs of transforming growth factor β (TGF) serine-threonine receptor kinases, TGF-β type I (Baboon, Babo) and II receptors. However, the roles of activin way have not well been explored in non-Drosophilid insects. In the present paper, we compared the functions of Activin β (Actβ) ligand and receptor isoform BaboB in post-embryonic development in a defoliating ladybird Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata.

The amphibian metamorphosis assay (AMA) is an in vivo screen to assess potential interactions of chemicals with the amphibian thyroid system. Tadpoles are exposed for 21-days, then assessed for development and growth after 7 days and at test termination. This paper presents data from studies performed to satisfy test orders from the US EPA's Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program.
