Water use strategies in pines and oaks across biomes are modulated by soil water availability.

Tree Physiol

March 2025

CREAF, Bellaterra (Cerdanyola del Vallès), Catalonia, Spain.

Quercus and Pinus are amongst the most economically and ecologically relevant genera of woody species across northern hemisphere forests. Mixed pine-oak woodlands are also abundant in temperate and Mediterranean regions. The recent shift towards dominance of oaks in detriment of pines, reported in several regions, could be partly driven by differential drought responses between genera and associated with climate change.

Evolutionary constraints significantly limit the diversity of naturally occurring enzymes, thereby reducing the sequence repertoire available for enzyme discovery and engineering. Recent breakthroughs in protein structure prediction and de novo design, powered by artificial intelligence, now enable to create enzymes with desired functions without solely relying on traditional genome mining. Here, a computational strategy is demonstrated for creating new-to-nature polyethylene terephthalate hydrolases (PET hydrolases) by leveraging the known catalytic mechanisms and implementing multiple deep learning algorithms and molecular computations.

Patients' perspectives of receiving an early vocational rehabilitation following major traumatic injury.

Disabil Rehabil

March 2025

Monash-Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre, School of Psychological Sciences, Monash University, Clayton, Australia.

Purpose: Return to work (RTW) after a major traumatic injury (MTI; traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multi-trauma orthopaedic injury) is an important rehabilitation outcome. This study aimed to explore the experience of early vocational rehabilitation (EVR) after MTI, and RTW barriers/facilitators.

Methods: Adopting a qualitative design, 24 people with MTI were interviewed about participating in the Early Intervention Vocational Rehabilitation Service (EIVRS).

Applied sports science and medicine for female cricket players: Systematic scoping review.

J Sports Sci

March 2025

Wits Cricket Research Hub for Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation, Department of Physiotherapy, School of Therapeutic Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

This review mapped currently available sports science and sports medicine (SSSM) research specific to female cricket players. Original research was included if data on female cricket players was presented, all ages and levels worldwide, from the earliest records to 19 January 2025. Databases searched included MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, EBSCOhost, ProQuest Health, ScienceDirect, Medical Complete, and Scopus, along with trial registers and grey literature.

DiatOmicBase: a versatile gene-centered platform for mining functional omics data in diatom research.

Plant J

March 2025

Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique, Laboratoire de Photobiologie et Physiologie des Plastes et des Microalgues, UMR7141 Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Sorbonne Université, Paris, 75005, France.

Diatoms are prominent microalgae found in all aquatic environments. Over the last 20 years, thanks to the availability of genomic and genetic resources, diatom species such as Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Thalassiosira pseudonana have emerged as valuable experimental model systems for exploring topics ranging from evolution to cell biology, (eco)physiology, and biotechnology. Since the first genome sequencing projects initiated more than 20 years ago, numerous genome-enabled datasets have been generated, based on RNA-Seq and proteomics experiments, epigenomes, and ecotype variant analysis.
