Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and represents a spectrum of liver injury beginning with hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) progressing to inflammation and culminating in cirrhosis. Multiple factors contribute to ALD progression and disease severity. Here, we overview several crucial mechanisms related to ALD end-stage outcome development, such as epigenetic changes, cell death, hemolysis, hepatic stellate cells activation, and hepatic fatty acid binding protein 4.

Passenger lymphocyte syndrome is an immunologic disorder observed in solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in which B lymphocytes within a donor graft are transferred to the recipient and subsequently produce circulating antibodies against host red blood cell antigens. The syndrome is most likely to occur in minor ABO blood group mismatched or Rh incompatible transplantation. Although generally mild and self-limited, the resulting haemolytic burden has the potential to increase the risk of infection, graft failure and death.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy of serum/plasma represents an alluring molecular diagnostic tool, especially for cancer, as it can provide a molecular fingerprint of clinical samples based on vibrational modes of chemical bonds. However, despite the superior performance, the routine adoption of this technique for clinical settings has remained elusive. This is due to the potential confounding factors that are often overlooked and pose a significant barrier to clinical translation.
