The objective of this study was to identify genomic regions associated with fat-related traits using a Japanese Black cattle population in Hyogo. From 1836 animals, those with high or low values were selected on the basis of corrected phenotype and then pooled into high and low groups (n = 100 each), respectively. DNA pool-based genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed using Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip v2 with three replicate assays for each pooled sample. GWAS detected that two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on BTA7 (ARS-BFGL-NGS-35463 and Hapmap23838-BTA-163815) and one SNP on BTA12 (ARS-BFGL-NGS-2915) significantly affected fat percentage (FAR). The significance of ARS-BFGL-NGS-35463 on BTA7 was confirmed by individual genotyping in all pooled samples. Moreover, association analysis between SNP and FAR in 803 Japanese Black cattle revealed a significant effect of SNP on FAR. Thus, further investigation of these regions is required to identify FAR-associated genes and mutations, which can lead to the development of DNA markers for marker-assisted selection for the genetic improvement of beef quality.

[Impacts of freeze-thaw process on soil microbial nutrient limitation in slope farmlands of the Chinese Mollisol region].

State Key Laboratory of Soil Erosion and Dryland Farming on Loess Plateau, Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Northwest A&F University, Yangling 712100, Shaanxi, China.

Understanding the impacts of freeze-thaw action on soil microbial nutrient limitation can provide important support for sustainable utilization of black soil resources. We analyzed the impacts of freeze-thaw action on soil microbial nutrient limitation on a slope farmland located in a typical thick Mollisol region of Keshan County, Heilongjiang Province. We examined the responses of soil microbial nutrient limitation to soil erosion rates through measuring soil nutrient, soil microbial biomass, and soil enzyme activities before and after freeze-thaw under natural conditions, and estimated the soil erosion rates by Cs tracing technology.

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3) receptor (RXFP2) expression levels on spermatozoa and INSL3 concentrations in the seminal plasma of fresh semen from beef bulls with different levels of sperm morphological normality. Ejaculates (n = 44) were collected from 21 yearling Japanese Black beef bulls and categorized into three groups based on the levels of sperm morphological normality: High (normal morphology ≥ 80%; n = 23), Mid (< 80% & ≥ 65%; n = 10) and Low (< 65%; n = 11). Immunofluorescence was used to determine the localization and expression levels of RXFP2 in spermatozoa.

Black Hairy Tongue Observed During Esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama, JPN.

Black hairy tongue, also known as , is a benign oral condition characterized by a dark discoloration and "hairy" appearance on the tongue's dorsal surface, resulting from elongated filiform papillae. This condition is associated with risk factors such as smoking, poor oral hygiene, and diabetes, which increase susceptibility to microbial colonization, particularly by species. Although commonly diagnosed by visual inspection, black hairy tongue is infrequently observed during endoscopic procedures.

Vonoprazan is a novel acid blocker with greater potency than proton pump inhibitors. A Japanese study reported no significant safety concerns over 5 years of Vonoprazan use; however, elevated serum gastrin and increased parietal cell and foveolar hyperplasia were observed, and long-term safety data beyond 5 years are limited. We report a case that used Vonoprazan for 6 years, complicated by significant gastric epithelial changes during treatment and acute duodenal mucosal lesions following its discontinuation.

Neighborhood Racial and Ethnic Composition Typology and Breast Cancer Risk: The Multiethnic Cohort Study.

Am J Epidemiol

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Medicine, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, California, United States.

Living in racially and ethnically segregated neighborhoods may increase the risk of breast cancer. We examined associations between neighborhood racial and ethnic composition typology and incident primary invasive breast cancer risk in a population-based sample of 102,615 African American/Black, Japanese American, Native Hawaiian, Latino, and White females residing in California and Hawaii from the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC) study between 1993-2019. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression.
