Objectives: Virtual surgical planning (VSP) allows for optimal reconstruction of maxillary defects with fibula free flaps. Current data are limited regarding long-term complications of patient-specific plates (PSPs) in this setting. Our objective was to determine long-term complications of PSPs in maxillary reconstruction using fibula free flaps.

A 57-year-old man presented with a tibial shaft fracture treated with tibial intramedullary nail fixation and plate and screw fixation for fibular fracture. Two weeks postoperatively, the patient developed skin sloughing with exposed bone and metal at the fracture site. Three weeks postoperatively, a physical examination revealed swelling of the left lateral malleolus and lower leg, a skin defect of approximately 3 × 5 cm at the lower third of the left tibia with an exposed fracture site and hardware in between the fracture fragments.

Low-cost, mobile EEG hardware for SSVEP applications.

HardwareX

September 2024

Dokuz Eylul University, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Biomedical Technologies, Turkey.

The global shortage of integrated circuits due to the COVID-19 pandemic has made it challenging to build biopotential acquisition devices like electroencephalography (EEG) hardware. To address this issue, a new hardware system using common ICs has been designed, which is cost-effective, precise, and easily accessible from global distributors. The hardware system comprises 8-channel inputs EEG hardware with a mobile headset capable of acquiring 5-30Hz EEG signals.

Gait simulators play a crucial role in assessing the performance of physical prototypes of prosthetic knees, validating numerical simulation findings, and reducing dependency on user trials during prosthesis development. However, their practical application is limited because of substantial capital investment required for sophisticated high degrees-of-freedom (DOF) system development on one side and insufficient DOF for accurate simulation on the other. In this study, we evaluated the minimum DOF of thigh segment that a gait simulator should have to test the performance of prosthetic knees in a cost-effective manner.

Tracking head movement inside an MR scanner using electromagnetic coils.

Heliyon

July 2024

Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7 2RD, UK.

Prospective motion corrections in brain imaging for MRI are fairly challenging. Monitoring involuntary head movement inside MR scanner is crucial for prospective motion correction. This initial study delves into utilizing simulations to track the head's movements within an MRI scanner, achieved by measuring induced voltage changes from time-varying magnetic field gradients in head-mounted coils.
