Article Abstract

Crabtree's catalyst was encapsulated inside the pores of the sulfonated MIL-101(Cr) metal-organic framework (MOF) by cation exchange. This hybrid catalyst is active for the heterogeneous hydrogenation of non-functionalized alkenes either in solution or in the gas phase. Moreover, encapsulation inside a well-defined hydrophilic microenvironment enhances catalyst stability and selectivity to hydrogenation over isomerization for substrates bearing ligating functionalities. Accordingly, the encapsulated catalyst significantly outperforms its homogeneous counterpart in the hydrogenation of olefinic alcohols in terms of overall conversion and selectivity, with the chemical microenvironment of the MOF host favouring one out of two competing reaction pathways.

Introduction of Crabtree's iridium-based hydrogenation catalyst in 1977 marked a paradigm shift both with respect to the role of iridium in homogeneous catalysis as well as catalytic hydrogenation of olefins. In 1998, Pfaltz introduced an improved catalyst, by use of BARF as anion, and established the first chiral variant of the Crabtree catalyst. This led to numerous practical highly enantioselective syntheses.

Chiral iridium complexes derived from Crabtree's catalyst are highly useful in modern hydrogenations of olefins attributed to high reactivity, stereoselectivity, and stability. Despite that these precatalysts are pH neutral, the reaction mixtures turn acidic under hydrogenation conditions. This Perspective is devoted to the implications of the intrinsic Brønsted acidity of catalytic intermediates in asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins.

The first total synthesis of avenaol was achieved using a new robust strategy involving all-cis-substituted cyclopropane formation via an alkylidene cyclopropane. The keys to success for the total synthesis were (i) Rh-catalyzed intramolecular cyclopropanation of an allene; (ii) Ir-catalyzed stereoselective double-bond isomerization to form an all-cis cyclopropane; and (iii) differentiation of two hydroxymethyl groups via regioselective cyclization and oxidation of tetrahydropyran based on the reactivity of cyclopropyl group. This strategy effectively avoids cyclopropane ring opening and undesired formation of a cage structure.

Reduction of phosphoric acid (HPO) or tetra- n-butylammonium bisulfate ([TBA][HSO]) with trichlorosilane leads to the formation of the bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide ([P(SiCl)], 1) and trichlorosilylsulfide ([ClSiS], 2) anions, respectively. Balanced equations for the formation of the TBA salts of anions 1 and 2 were formulated based on the identification of hexachlorodisiloxane and hydrogen gas as byproducts arising from these reductive processes: i) [HPO] + 10HSiCl → 1 + 4O(SiCl) + 6H for P and ii) [HSO] + 9HSiCl → 2 + 4O(SiCl) + 5H for S. Hydrogen gas was identified by its subsequent use to hydrogenate an alkene ((-)-terpinen-4-ol) using Crabtree's catalyst ([(COD)Ir(py)(PCy)][PF], COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, py = pyridine, Cy = cyclohexyl).
