Background/aim: The High-Mobility Group A1 (HMGA1) protein has been implicated in human malignancies, playing an important role in cancer proliferation, angiogenesis and metastasis. Increased HMGA1 expression has been found in skin mouse tumors, whereas Hmga1-null mice were protected against skin carcinogenesis. Here, we examined the expression of HMGA1 in human skin tumors, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.
Materials And Methods: Tumor and normal skin tissues from 15 affected patients were surgically excised, and mRNA and protein extraction was performed. mRNA and protein content for both HMGA1 and MMP-11, a proteinase enzyme that plays a role in tumor development and progression, was measured by real-time PCR and western blotting, respectively. Data were analyzed by the SPSS software.
Results: HMGA1 mRNA and protein expression patterns were higher in neoplastic skin lesions, compared to normal skin (p<0.001). Similar results were observed for MMP-11.
Conclusion: Our data confirm previous observations in mice studies, and suggest that HMGA1 and MMP-11 may play a key role in the proliferation and progression of skin tumors in humans.

Background: The decrease in S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) leads to an elevation of S-nitrosylation, thereby exacerbating the progression of cardiomyopathy in response to hemodynamic stress. However, the mechanisms under GSNOR decrease remain unclear. Here, we identify NEDD4 (neuronal precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated 4) as a novel molecule that plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy, by modulating GSNOR levels, thereby demonstrating significant therapeutic potential.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) play a crucial role in transmitting genetic information to the next-generation. In chickens, genetically edited PGCs can be propagated and subsequently transplanted into recipient embryos to produce offspring with desired genetic traits. However, during early embryogenesis, the effects of external conditions on PGC migration through the vascular system to the gonads have yet to be explored, which may affect the efficiency of preparing gene-edited chickens.

Collagen type XI alpha 1 (COL11A1), a critical member of the collagen superfamily, is essential for tissue structure and integrity. This study aimed to validate previously identified variations in COL11A1 expression during breast cancer carcinogenesis and progression, as well as elucidate their clinical implications. COL11A1 mRNA expression levels were assessed using real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) in 30 pairs of normal breast tissue and primary breast cancer, 30 pairs of primary breast cancer and lymph node metastases, 30 benign tumors, and 107 primary breast cancers.

is a gene that codes for a tumour suppressor protein involved in various types of cancer. It was first described in retinoblastoma and is segregated as an autosomal dominant trait with high penetrance. In 1971, Knudson proposed his hypothesis of the two hits, where two mutational events are required to initiate tumour progression.

Members of the families Thermosynechococcaceae and Thermostichaceae are well-known unicellular thermophilic cyanobacteria and a non-thermophilic genus was newly classified into the former. Analysis of the codon usage bias (CUB) of cyanobacterial species inhabiting different thermal and non-thermal niches will benefit the understanding of their genetic and evolutionary characteristics. Herein, the CUB and codon context patterns of protein-coding genes were systematically analyzed and compared between members of the two families.
