Percutaneous coronary angioplasty (PCA) is sometimes complicated by bradyarrhythmias necessitating emergency temporary cardiac pacing. This is usually performed by the classical transvenous endocardial approach. This experimental study investigated the possibility of using the metallic guide wire used during PCA as a monopolar electrode. Systematic electrical stimulation at different levels of the coronary arteries in 6 anaesthetised pigs showed threshold levels in the distal segments of 3 to 15 mA, close to the values observed in the right ventricule. Short periods of pacing were well tolerated. On the other hand, prolonged pacing (2 to 5 days) invariably led to the formation of a thrombus in the coronary segment occupied by the metallic guide wire and so should be avoided. This study shows that the metallic guide wire can be used as an emergency pacing electrode during PCA but this should be limited to a short period. This technique could replace the systematic introduction of classical transvenous pacing catheters.

Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is a common pregnancy complication associated with significant neonatal morbidity. Prenatal exposure to environmental chemicals, including toxic and/or essential metal(loid)s, may contribute to PTB risk.
Objective: We aimed to summarize the epidemiologic evidence of the associations among levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) assessed during the prenatal period and PTB or gestational age at delivery; to assess the quality of the literature and strength of evidence for an effect for each metal; and to provide recommendations for future research.

Endoscopic management of benign pancreaticobiliary disorders encompasses a range of procedures designed to address complications in gallstone disease, choledocholithiasis, and pancreatic disorders. Acute cholecystitis is typically treated with cholecystectomy or percutaneous drainage (PT-GBD), but for high-risk or future surgical candidates, alternative decompression methods, such as endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage (ETP-GBD), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD), are effective. PT-GBD is associated with significant discomfort as well as variable adverse event rates.

This review evaluates needle navigation technologies in minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery (MICS), identifying their strengths and limitations and the requirements for an ideal needle navigation system that features optimal guidance and easy adoption in clinical practice. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and IEEE databases up until June 2024 identified original studies on needle navigation in MICS. Eligible studies were those published within the past decade and that performed MICS requiring needle navigation technologies in adult patients.
