The Epithelial Science Expert Group convened on 18-19 October 2023, in Naples, Italy, to discuss the current understanding of the fundamental role of the airway epithelium in asthma and other respiratory diseases and to explore the future direction of patient care. This review summarises the key concepts and research questions that were raised. As an introduction to the epithelial era of research, the evolution of asthma management throughout the ages was discussed and the role of the epithelium as an immune-functioning organ was elucidated.

Article Synopsis
  • Bronchial asthma is a common chronic respiratory condition in children that affects their overall quality of life due to exacerbations and persistent symptoms.
  • The management of asthma has focused on improving lung function early in childhood to prevent long-term health issues, as early deficits can lead to significant problems in adulthood.
  • Antioxidants play a crucial role in managing asthma by balancing oxidative stress in the lungs, and this review highlights the complex interactions between oxidative and antioxidative factors, pointing to future therapeutic approaches.

Paraganglioma of the middle mediastinum has a prevalence of 1%-2% of paragangliomas and less than 1% of mediastinal masses. It is generally asymptomatic and can easily be confused with other pathologies. The following is the case of a 50-year-old patient who, as an incidental finding, documented an injury between the aorta and the pulmonary artery, hypervascularized, which was embolized prior to surgery, which facilitated the complete resection of the lesion by sternotomy.

The vocal organ of birds, the syrinx, represents a key innovation in the evolutionary history of vertebrate communication. Three major avian clades: passerines, parrots, and hummingbirds, independently acquired both specialized syringeal structures and vocal-production learning, between which a functional relationship has been proposed but remains poorly understood. In hummingbirds, the syrinx has never been studied comparatively alongside non-learning relatives in the parent clade Strisores.

Article Synopsis
  • This study provides the first detailed analysis of a new variant of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) called D181 found in poultry in Morocco, focusing on both its pathological and molecular characteristics.
  • The research involved six poultry farms with various age groups, revealing severe egg production issues in layers and respiratory problems in broilers, alongside significant necropsy findings like hemorrhagic ovarian follicles and respiratory distress.
  • Molecular analysis showed a close genetic relationship between the Moroccan D181 strains and similar strains identified in the Netherlands in 2018, suggesting potential pathways for disease transmission.
